JOB SUMMARY
The Horticulture Coordinator is a key member of the Horticulture and Exhibitions team responsible for
organizing and coordinating programs and projects primarily in support of horticulture exhibitions and
inventory management. The Horticulture Coordinator reports to the Associate Director of Horticulture
Collections and Design and collaborates closely with various teams and departments to schedule, plan,
coordinate, and execute programs and projects successfully. The Horticulture Coordinator can play
numerous roles and specializes in various aspects of planning and operations at the Conservatory while
serving as a leader. This role supports departmental and facility goals, mission, and values with a strong
emphasis on customer service while being an ambassador for the organization.

Additional Information: This is a full-time, non-exempt position. This position is eligible for the Conservatory's benefit package offered to full-time employees, which includes medical, dental and vision insurance, company paid Life/AD&D/Short-Term and Long-Term Disability insurance, participation in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement Program (OPERS), optional 457(b) Deferred Compensation plan, generous Paid Time Off (PTO), and complimentary membership to the Conservatory.

Compensation: $21.00/hour

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees the inventory of horticulture exhibition props and display items at offsite storage. This includes ensuring items are accurately documented, labeled, organized and stored to maintain their quality.
  • Coordinates and schedules the staging and transport of objects to and from offsite storage in preparation of horticulture exhibition installations and deinstallations. Prepares items for transport and plans packing and inventory work to ensure established timelines are met.
  • Supports the horticulture design team by processing incoming shipments and orders of new products.
  • Updates entries in the electronic database for new products, labels and assigns temporary storage.
  • Oversees horticultural exhibition custom fabrication projects through collaboration with department designers. Supports the design team to evaluate, investigate and resolve show-specific design elements that allow for easy implementation.
  • Create shop drawings, coordinate a schedule of work and lead fabrication projects to ensure timely completion of projects in advance of exhibition installations.
  • Maintains team supplies and the overall care and cleanliness of key storage areas; this includes monitoring supply needs and keeping spaces prepared for operations on an ongoing basis.
  • Coordinates orders, receives, and sorts plant orders upon arrival; identifies new plant sources and provides order updates. Supports plant procurement for the plant collections and displays, including overseeing plant donation inquiries.
  • Maintains the support greenhouse and yard plant inventory in support of the design project schedule.
  • Maintains photo documentation of horticulture exhibitions and temporary displays, as well as other collections or display needs as assigned.
  • Coordinates and processes horticulture exhibitions recap documents; evaluates and plans for future needs.
  • Assists with department signage maintenance and installs and maintains horticulture interpretive signage.
  • Assists with horticulture exhibitions installations, supports plant records projects.
  • Maintains clear records of all transactions to obtain a balanced budget.
  • Ensures proper use and care of equipment and follows state and federal laws that address the safe use of equipment and the application, storage and disposal of pesticides, This includes the proper use and wear of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Promptly observes and reports concerns regarding horticultural displays or safety issues, or address situations when appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and demonstrates a focus on serving visitors and guests of the Conservatory.


REQUIREMENTS (Education/ Experience)

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Botany or a related field preferred OR minimum 2 years work experience in professional landscape/horticulture.
  • Demonstrated experience with project planning and coordination.
  • Demonstrated experience in custom fabrication, including the ability to read and create basic shop drawings, repair and maintenance skills and proficient use power tools and equipment.
  • Experience with database or inventory management preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License with the ability to provide own transportation to and from work sites if needed.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, holidays and special events as needed.

  • Proficient knowledge of software programs (Microsoft 365) and ability to learn and adapt to various software and technology programs.

  • Knowledge of plant material and cultivation requirements.
  • Critical thinking skills; the ability to analyze, problem solve, and collaborate
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to multitask, manage projects, problem solve and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to to effectively and accurately process, analyze and configure data; ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical functional team members.
  • Ability to cultivate professional, service oriented relationships with staff, volunteers, vendors, donors, and board members.
  • Ability to motivate others and foster an environment where teamwork is encouraged and collaboration is valued.
  • Ability to work within budgets and support revenue goals.
  • Frequently lifts, carries, or otherwise moves materials weighing up to 50lbs to accomplish plant installations and maintenance with or without accommodation.
  • Ability and willingness to perform hands-on gardening and other duties in all types of weather, indoors and outdoors: heat and humidity, freezing temperatures, wind and rain.
