What are the responsibilities and job description for the SCHOOL NURSE position at Franklin Public Schools?
The Franklin Public Schools, a Prek-12 district, is seeking a RN at the Jefferson/Remington School complex. School nursing is a dynamic discipline embracing a variety of functions which fall under the broad categories of health assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation, as well as study and research. Due to academic preparation and professional skill in these areas, the school nurse is a faculty member qualified to assume responsibility for various aspects of the school health services.
The School Nurse reports to and is evaluated by the Building Principal and the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services.
School Nurse
Responsibilities:
- Assess and evaluate students' health status
- Serve as health advocate and provide primary and emergency health care to students, staff and visitors
- Provide appropriate staff with student medical information and guidance related to student health issues as needed
- Provide consultation, relevant teaching, counseling and guidance to assist students and their parents in assuming responsibility for health care
- Serve as a resource person in school health education programs for students, school personnel and parents
- Administer medication in accordance with school and state policies
- Conduct screening of students for vision, and hearing, including follow-up retests, appropriate referrals, and notification of parents
- Conduct screening for height/weight and report results to parents and state
-Teach students and staff various health topics including prevention and control of illness, communicable disease, pediculosis, dental problems and skin protection
- Assist in determining the presence of significant psycho-educational disturbances in the school-aged child
- Participate in the modification of the school program to meet the needs of children with disabilities and medical conditions that require modifications in school
- Develop Individual Health Care Plans
-Act as an advocate and consultant for children suspected of being abused or neglected
- Serve on building and system wide committees as needed
- Maintain continuing education requirements for recertification by DESE
- Maintain supplies, take inventory and order necessary equipment for health office
- Utilize SNAP software to document and maintain accurate health records for students
- Maintain health room statistics as required for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health
- Promote a healthful and safe on-site environment for students and staff
Qualifications:
-Registered Nurse licensed in Massachusetts and DESE license
-School experience preferred
-Must be the kind of person who is warm, caring, and respectful and have a strong desire to work with young children.
