This temporary position runs from January 15th through the end of April and involves working on Great Lakes vessels during the winter months. Employees will be exposed to the elements, including cold temperatures and inclement weather, making this role ideal for individuals who thrive in challenging environments. Your expertise in blueprint interpretation, fabrication, and assembly will ensure Great Lakes vessels meet the highest standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Precision Fabrication: Lay out, position, and secure parts using advanced tools like auto levels, transits, and calipers to ensure accuracy.
- Steel Mastery: Cut, shape, and prepare steel using powered saws, gas torches, and plasma tools.
- Structural Assembly: Install or repair decks, bulkheads, and tank linings to exact specifications.
- Technical Problem-Solving: Inspect grooves, angles, and gaps using micrometers or calipers to ensure optimal fit and quality.
- Metalwork Expertise: Heat, form, and dress metal parts with torches and arc welding equipment.
- Blueprint Savvy: Read and analyze blueprints and engineering drawings to plan layouts and operations.
- Creative Innovation: Develop templates and work aids to enhance efficiency and precision.
- Maintenance Skills: Troubleshoot and resolve minor issues with equipment and tools.
- Perform additional duties as needed to support the team's success.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Expertise in fitting, fabrication, and welding techniques.
- Knowledge of standard manufacturing and shipbuilding practices.
- Proficiency with hand tools like hammers, grinders, and tape measures.
- Strong ability to follow directions and adapt to new tasks.

Qualifications
- Previous experience in a similar industry preferred.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Ability to pass a qualification test and drug screening.
Physical Requirements
Position requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, crawling, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, overhead work, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity. Must be able to work in tight, confined spaces, such as accessing manholes, and awkward positions for long periods of time. Must be able to conduct inside and outside work in all temperatures. Use of manufacturing equipment. Work in environment where harmful dusts, fogs, fumes, gases, etc. might be present and the use of a respirator may be required. Ability to work in inclement weather conditions/areas that at times are not environmentally controlled. Able to move/lift/pull/push 50 lbs.
