The Educator & Learning Specialist is a position within the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Core, a highly collaborative and strategic department that creates, guides, and executes the strategic DEI plan for the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. The DEI Core is led by the Vice President and Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer (VPCDIO), and currently has several other professionals engaged in DEI practice.

Reporting to the Associate Director, DEI Learning, Client Services, & Data Analytics, the Educator & Learning Specialist develops curricula and delivers courses for the comprehensive educational initiative as well as supports the overall departmental activities where learning is occurring in alignment with Fred Hutch core values and the strategic vision of the DEI Core. This is a hybrid position, which will have the opportunity to work partially at our campus and remotely.
Responsibilities:
  • Supervises one direct report – the Associate Educator & Learning Specialist
  • Develops and maintains overall education philosophy and approach
  • Designs and implements current, best practice anti-racist DEI education programs, curriculum and learning opportunities and appropriate delivery channels (such as live, virtual, self-directed) tailored to Fred Hutch needs and consistent with approved philosophy and approach
  • Serves as presenter, panelist, educator and/or content developer for specific education sessions and learning experiences within overall education program and curriculum
  • In collaboration with the Associate Director, identifies, selects and coordinates with other DEI Core team members, Fred Hutch staff and external individuals and vendors to serve as presenter, panelist, educator or content developer for specific education sessions and learning opportunities
  • Evaluates, updates and continuously improves education and learning programs and services to best-in-class level
  • Conducts on-demand DEI learning for various internal stakeholder groups as assigned or within parameters established by Director and Associate Director
  • Works with the Associate Director, Executive Assistant and Administrative Manager, Operations & Initiatives to proactively message the DEI Core’s education and learning philosophy, offerings and outcomes as part of the DEI Core’s communications plan and program or event-specific communications needs
General Responsibilities
  • Serves as the representative of the DEI Core on institutional committees and task forces as assigned, showing up as a consistent and reliable, well-informed, and skilled DEI practitioner, and collaborative colleague
  • Engages in ongoing and relevant professional development activities appropriate to this position
    Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Teaching, Sociology, Ethnic or Cultural Studies or related field
  • Minimum 3 years teaching experience in an academic, healthcare, or non-profit environment
  • Demonstrated understanding of and genuine commitment to anti-racism, liberation, decolonization, and other DEI related topics, goals, and principles.
  • Ability to teach and facilitate deep learning and transformative praxis for professionals, individuals and groups
  • A bridge builder among diverse communities with varied perspectives, understandings, and experiences
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for complex situations, relationships, and goals
  • Formal experience teaching youth, adults, or professionals
  • Experience and skills for designing presentations, workshops, retreats or other learning spaces
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective DEI topics related curricula and programs
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work independently and collaboratively
  • Commitment to building and sustaining inclusive work environments and ability to model effective team member skills, including active listening, healthy conflict resolution skills, respect, accountability and collaboration, and avoidance of gossip, cliques and sabotaging behaviors
  • Ability to work effectively in a changing work environment and culture

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Knowledge of anti-racist pedagogy
  • Understanding of and experience with adult or professional learning
  • Knowledge/experience with universal design for learning
  • Formal post-baccalaureate education or training in a related field
  • Some supervisory or formal mentoring experience
  • A reflective and self-aware teacher and DEI practitioner
  • Experience in a nonprofit or healthcare environment
  • Fast and effective learner for using learning technologies, teaching platforms, etc.
In addition to job duties at Fred Hutch, this position also requires access to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, which requires COVID-19 vaccination without exceptions.
Accordingly, as a condition of employment for this Fred Hutch position, newly hired employees must provide proof of vaccination before their first day of employment.
