Position Summary:
This position supports the science laboratory courses, with particular emphasis directed to the Biology and Biotechnology courses. The Science Laboratory Technician II assists in providing laboratory procedure-related technical support for the science faculty while maintaining a safe educational environment. This position maintains the microbiology equipment, cultures, and culture media for all Biology and Biotechnology courses, under the supervision of the Science Laboratory Manager. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following are the functions essential to performing this job:
- Prepare chemical solutions and materials for biology and biotechnology courses.
- Maintain stock cultures and prepare media for biology and biotechnology courses including bacteria and tissue culture samples.
- Prepare additional required reagents, including staining dyes, chemical reagents, etc.
- Maintain and monitor equipment including but not limited to refrigerators, freezers, microscopes, incubators, liquid nitrogen tank, bio-safety cabinets, fume hoods, fermentation/bioreactor, thermocyclers, etc.
- Assist the Lab Manager as needed with lab preparation for other biological sciences courses.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment for biology and biotechnology courses and submit purchasing orders as needed.
- Restock biology and biotechnology labs with supplies and materials as needed.
- Receive and document receipt of ordered supplies.
- Keep a clean workspace by routinely disinfecting surfaces and washing glassware.
- Handle and document hazardous and chemical wastes according to established Hazmat training protocols.
- Provide technical support to faculty.
- Understand, interpret, and apply college policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s Degree in biological sciences or laboratory technology
2. One (1) year of experience in laboratory setting
3. Experience using Microsoft Office and Outlook applications including email and calendar

Desired Qualifications
1. Previous experience with pedagogical methods in a laboratory setting
2. Previous experience administering applied microbiology laboratory techniques especially aseptic technique
3. Hazmat waste training and Mandatory GMP (good manufacturing practice)/GLP (good laboratory practice) training
4. Excellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills
