This non-sworn position provides general operating assistance to Frederick County Sheriff's Office (FCSO) Headquarters, with primary responsibility for duty desk telephone calls (Law Enforcement Bureau), assisting the public and providing reception services. Supervision is received from the Police Information Specialist Supervisor.

NOTE: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy.  For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate.

  • Answer citizen inquiries, both walk-ins and telephone; provide information and assistance to visitors and telephone callers
  • Complete Incident Reports
  • Perform hit confirmations via METERS/NCIC
  • Enter/remove protective orders, missing persons, stolen property, and warrants in METERS/NCIC
  • Answer non-emergency line and transfer emergency calls to dispatch
  • Access NCIC/MILES and other computer networks to retrieve and/or verify needed information
  • Access and retrieve arrest warrants and other reports from files as needed by Deputy Sheriffs for Court, for public inquiries, etc.
  • Distribute reports, memos, mail, forms, etc. to FCSO personnel 
  • Communicate with Deputy Sheriffs and supervisors via radio system (this does not involve dispatching)
  • Run criminal history reports for deputies and to enter warrants into METERS/NCIC
  • Distribute Protective and Peace Orders, and Emergency Evaluations to patrol for service
  • Update service of Peace and Protective Orders in I-Leads and provide the courts with copies of Return of Service sheets once orders are served.
  • Communicate with District Court Clerk, Circuit Court Clerk, Circuit Court Security, and other outside agencies
  • Provide victims and offenders with legal resources
  • Provide detailed criminal history information for respondents to the serving deputies for safety vis FCSO/ warrant information sheet
  • Log patrol checks; update daily patrol schedule/modify those calling out; fax to communications
  • Compile and prepare operating and statistical reports in accordance with telephone reporting system policy
  • Perform monthly validations
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

  • High school graduation, or the equivalent
  • Minimum age 18 years
  • U.S.A. citizenship
  • Minimum 1 year customer service work experience to include experience taking phone calls in a professional setting
  • Minimum 1 year experience using a computer (personal or professional accepted)
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  • Ability to learn and effectively apply State laws; FCSO rules, regulations, codes and procedures; and two-way radio communications regulations and standards
  • Strong clerical skills including the ability to accurately produce written work and maintain/verify files and entries
  • Ability to work independently, set appropriate priorities when multiple tasks are required, and complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain appropriate confidentiality
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other law enforcement agencies and staff, and the general public
  • Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills
  • Ability to hear and understand the speech of deputies and emergency communications personnel via radio
  • Ability to multi-task while simultaneously talking on the phone
PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:
  • Law enforcement, public safety or dispatch work experience
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly sit, lift up to 20 pounds, and perform repetitive motions; occasionally walk, stoop/kneel/crouch and reach; and rarely climb, push up to 40 pounds, pull up to 40 pounds and drive.
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors; and rarely work outdoors and in a noisy environment. 
  • Ability to work rotating shift assignments to include day hours, evening hours, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to provide own transportation to training sessions, meetings, etc. 
  • This position is considered "essential," and to report for work in the event of a weather emergency (or other circumstances) when County offices are closed
  • This position is subject to random drug testing, to include marijuana
  • When considered under the Frederick County Employees Retirement Plan, this position is designated as "non-uniformed"
  • Secondary employment will not be approved for FCSO personnel until successful completion of probationary period
  • Candidates who were previously rejected for FCSO employment may reapply for consideration, however those declined for reasons which assure another rejection will not be reconsidered

EXAMINATION PROCESS (may include):
1) An evaluation of training and experience
2) Related office skills tests
3) A spoken examination
4) One or more interviews
5) A pre-employment background investigation conducted by the Frederick County Sheriff's Office
6) A pre-employment polygraph test (inquiries include criminal, credit, drug use and personal history)
7) A pre-employment drug test to include marijuana
