The Educational Interpreter II provides sign language services for students, faculty, staff, families, and community stakeholders eligible to receive such services through Frederick Count Public Schools (FCPS).
Essential Functions
Reporting directly to the Coordinator of Interpreting Services, the Educational Interpreter I performs the following duties:
Facilitates Communication Through The Following Activities
- When interpreting for a student:
- Interprets/transliterates information, accurately conveying the thought, intent, and spirit of the sender in the communication mode determined by the Individualized Educational Program (IEP) team
- Interprets/transliterates situations outside the classroom as appropriate and assigned.
- Fosters appropriate use of an interpreter in a variety of settings.
- When interpreting for all other stakeholders eligible to receive interpreting services:
- Interprets/transliterates information, accurately conveying the thought, intent, and spirit of the message in the communication mode preferred by the stakeholder.
- Positioning self in a place that provides the best distance, lighting, background and angle for a clear line of sight to the speaker, media and interpreter
- Advocating the use of closed captioning and other technology devices.
- Uses preparation time effectively by acquiring and becoming familiar with materials, including but not limited to, topical content and technical vocabulary in textbooks and other media.
- Collaborate with other interpreters throughout FCPS to share information, ideas, and signs.
- Attend professional development sessions provided by FCPS.
Other Essential Functions
- Participates in providing educators general information about social, emotional and cultural aspects of individuals who are deaf/hard of hearing.
- Shares best practices for those utilizing interpreting services.
- Attends IEP Team meetings or provides information when requested by the school team.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Fluent in Sign Language.
- Completion of an interpreter training program from a higher education institute. NOTE: Three (3) years of successful experience as a sign language interpreter may be used in lieu of training program.
- Certification from one or more of the following: Registry of the interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS), Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), National Association of the Deaf (NAD).
- Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Background in an educational setting.
- Classroom interpreting experience.
- Familiarity with the FCPS policies, goals and programs.
