Job Summary
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, assists with patient care performing skills in accordance with established policies and procedures. Supports and participates in continuous quality improvement activities.
Supports, and is responsible for incorporating into job performance, the Frederick Health (FH) mission, vision, core values and customer service philosophy and adheres to the FH Compliance Program, including following all regulatory requirements and the FH Standards of Behavior.
Example of Essential Functions:
- Obtains and records patient’s vital signs and weight.
- Assists patients to disrobe providing protection of privacy and care of personal possessions.
- Initiates cardiac monitoring and performs 12 Lead EKG’s as directed.
- Performs venipuncture, inserts and/or discontinues intravenous catheters, obtains venous blood specimens
- Performs orthopedic splinting including OCL cast application, crutch fitting and teaching, soft cast application, and fitting/application of other various orthopedic support devices.
- Performs point of care testing as directed.
- Performs blood glucose monitoring as directed.
- Assists in morgue care.
- Assists in transferring a patient to diagnostic areas using a stretcher and/or wheelchair.
- Assists in preparing a patient for discharge or transfer.
- Prepares the patient area for incoming patients.
- Performs equipment checklist as assigned.
- Reports variances of equipment performance to the Charge Nurse.
- Uses equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and department standards.
- Functions as a member of the Code Blue and Go Teams.
- Performs close observation according to the hospital standards and guidelines.
- Contributes ideas on recommendations of solutions to increase efficiency and promote cost containment and quality of care.
- Demonstrates proper phone etiquette.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to read, write and comprehend medical terminology
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required:
- Current certification in BLS
- CNA Certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing as required by Health Occupations Article Title 8-6A-01 preferred
- Completion of skill competency checklists.
- Completion of departmental competencies within one year of hire.

Reports to Department Director/Manager and RN Staff in the Emergency Department
