Job Summary
Provides support to NICU both independently and under the supervision of the RN.
Supports and participates in continuous quality improvement activities. Functions within the Scope of Practice outlined by the Maryland Board of Nursing as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Essential Functions :
- Patient care activities :
o Taking vital signs on stable feeder / grower babies and reporting to RN.
o Feeding stable feeder / grower babies under supervision of the RN.
o Performing heel sticks for routine blood draws.
o Assists with transport of stable babies to other departments.
o Assists RN with set-up of sterile field for procedures such as Umbilical Line Insertion and Chest Tube Insertion.
o Assists ophthalmologist with eye exam.
o Properly clears field after procedure and notifies Sterile Processing to pick up trays.
o Assists with discharge of baby from NICU including discharging baby from HUGS Security and discharges mother in wheel chair with baby in car seat to the entrance.
o Stocks NICU with essential supplies and maintains supplies on various carts in NICU.
o Ensures that cabinets in NICU are stocked with linen and keeps an adequate supply of gowns and masks by scrub sink.
o Stock patient bassinet or incubator with adequate supply of appropriate sized diaper, baby wipes and appropriate formula.
o Oversees NICU ParE system and notifies Charge RN of discrepancies or missing items.
o Maintains order and cleanliness in the department and equipment storage room.
o Notifies Charge Nurse of broken or missing equipment.
o Maintains supply of various formulas. Checks with NICU staff to ascertain what specialty formulas are needed; maintains supply of Human Milk Fortifier, as well as Donor Milk.
o Prepares feedings per physicians orders.
o Keeps cabinets clear of unnecessary stock and ensures that formula supplies are not expired.
o Ensures cleanliness of breastmilk freezer and refrigerator; ensures that all breastmilk is properly labeled and stored in plastic bags; ensures that breastmilk is entered into Timeless.
o Maintains specialty linen in NICU.
o Organizes cabinets containing developmental supplies.
o Oversees laundering of specialty items and clothing.
o Complies with BirthPlace quality control standards.
o Participates in data collection and analysis of data from quality assessment activities.
o Participate in department performance improvement activities, developing strategies for improved patient care services.
o Performs daily accucheck quality controls.
o Answers phone and refers call to appropriate person.
o Performs Medical Order Entry
o Admits, transfers, and discharges patients within the HUGS Security System.

If applicable, must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status. Possess the ability to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his / her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit’s / department’s policies and procedures.
Reporting Relationship :
Reports to NICU Department Manager with direction from Charge RN and RNs.

Pay is based on experience, skills and education. If position is part-time, salary will be pro-rated based on scheduled hours. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on specialty if applicable. Non-Exempt positions may have shift differential and / or Overtime paid, if applicable.
Hourly Range : $19.30 - $27.77
Salary : $19 - $28
