The Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research is operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc.  The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

Program Description

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program is a comprehensive resource for scientists performing animal-based research to better understand cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other infectious diseases. We provide veterinary care, regulatory support, and routine and specialized husbandry services.

Our staff operates animal facilities in Bethesda and Frederick and provides high-quality animal care, including veterinary services, pre-operative and post-operative care, the quarantining of imported animals, reestablishing strains after an infection, clinical diagnoses, and molecular animal health monitoring to help investigators work with healthy animals appropriate for their research.

We offer an integrated portfolio of state-of-the-art research animal programs spanning genetically engineered mouse models, gnotobiotics, genome modifications within cells and mice, assisted reproduction and animal husbandry, specimen preservation, pathology and histotechnology, imaging, molecular diagnostics, and regulatory support.

Job Description

  • Daily tasks associated with the care, breeding and treatment of research animals for experimental purposes
  • Maintenance of a proper living environment for test animals, and observing and recording physical signs of animal health
  • Management of rodent breeding colonies consisting of multiple, genetically complex strains and associated record keeping
  • Specialized technical procedures including animal identification, weaning and collection of routine diagnostic samples
  • Preparation of supplies, routine maintenance of PIV racks and isolators, supply inventory, operating water bagger, operating autoclaves and delivering animals
  • Record keeping, data entry and reporting
  • Using personal protective equipment and changing into dedicated facility shoes and clothing before entering the facility
  • Adhering to strict safety protocols
  • Work schedule will include occasional weekend and holiday hours

Basic Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of a high school degree or equivalent
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience
    • OR any combination of education and progressively responsible technical experience which qualifies the candidate to sit for the LAT Certification Exam within 12 months of hire -or- an associate’s degree in Life Sciences or Veterinary Technology. Will encourage achievement of LAT certification; however, this is not a requirement
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate with management in a demanding scientific environment
  • Ability to keep detailed and accurate computer records and maintain/update data in computer-based applications/databases
  • Utilize basic computer skills
  • Ability to appropriately and effectively handle rodent research animals
  • Knowledge of policies and regulations governing care and use of research animals
  • Knowledge of standard operating procedures for animal facilities
  • Knowledge of routine tasks associated with general laboratory animal care
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and to wear respiratory protection equipment if necessary
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • ALAT certification preferred
  • Previous animal holding experience
  • Excellent organizational/observational skills
