Fleet Technician

The Fleet Technician position is an essential teammate in the fleet management department, fulfilling dynamic technical duties essential to maintaining an immaculate marine fleet at Freedom Boat Club of Wilmington. The Fleet Technician's goals and performance are designed and supervised by FBC Wilmington's Fleet Manager with assistance from senior fleet technicians where appropriate. The Fleet Technician will engage in a hands-on, applied learning environment designed to challenge and support the demonstrated skills outlined below.

Demonstrated Skills

• Use and maintain all equipment in shops and in-service vehicles.
• Maintain a safe and clean work environment, including but not limited to the shop and service vehicles.
• Sanding, preparing vessels for bottom paint.
• Bottom painting vessels.
• Cleaning and compounding hulls.
• Understand and demonstrate how to use and maintain a pressure washer.
• Understand and demonstrate how to use and maintain compressors for sanding.
• Servicing bilge pump and live well pumps.
• Schedule and perform preventative maintenance on all vessels in fleet.
• Diagnose and repair all vessel related issues that are reported (e.g. electrical, steering, damaged hardware).
• Diagnose and repair any engine issues that are reported in consultation with Fleet Manager wherever appropriate.
• Rig and install all equipment needed on each new vessel in fleet to be water ready.
• Keep all trailers in good working condition, repair all items that need to be addressed to make road ready, in compliance and documenting appropriately.
• Understand and keep track of issues and service entries in Fleetio system.
• Have knowledge of all engine manufacturers and to be able to look up parts for repairs.
• Ability to tow trailers with service vans/vehicles, launch, and load boats at a ramp.
• Direct communication with Fleet Manager, coordination with fleet team prioritizing issues and daily goals.
• Assessing member complaints reported dockside to verify, diagnose, record, and repair issues.
• Recording service using fleet management functions of Fleetio, and
• Other training and tasks as assigned.

Qualifications for Fleet Technician

• Must be over 18 years old,
• High school education or equivalent,
• Must have valid driver's license with clean record, and own transportation,
• Ability to work flexible hours and work around a changing schedule. Some weekend and evening hours required,
• Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job,
• Ability to drive a variety of boat types,
• Ability to execute multiple-step instructions, and
• Comfort with and willingness to use technology in the workplace.

Preferred Skills

• Fiberglass and gelcoat repair knowledge not required but would be advantageous.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
• Problem solver, ability to prioritize complex demands,
• Attention to detail, and
• Comfort around water.

Required Physical Abilities

• Transferring between boat and dock,
• Working outside in various weather conditions,
• Maneuvering in tight spaces,
• Standing, kneeling and/or crouching for prolonged intervals, and
• Lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
