Job Title: Director of Nursing (DON)
Reports to: Administrator

Job Summary:
Freedom Surgical Center is seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Nursing (DON) to lead clinical operations at our state-of-the-art, stand-alone surgical center, specializing in minimally invasive spine procedures and pain management. As the DON, you will oversee nursing, surgical technicians, and sterile processing department (SPD) staff, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and maintaining the highest quality of patient care. This role requires a hands-on leader with exceptional organizational, leadership, and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Leadership: Direct and oversee all clinical operations, ensuring the highest standards of patient care. Provide guidance to staff at all levels, fostering a collaborative environment to ensure smooth operations and optimal patient outcomes.
  • Staff Management: Recruit, train, schedule, and evaluate all clinical staff, including nursing, surgical technicians, and SPD personnel. Lead performance reviews, support Professional Development Plans, and offer coaching and guidance to cultivate a skilled and motivated team. Assist with HR efforts during onboarding and ensure maintenance of compliance for BLS and ACLS certifications for clinical staff.
  • Materials Management: Supervise inventory management, ensure timely ordering of supplies, and perform cost comparisons to maintain budget efficiency. Build strong communication with vendors to ensure seamless planning and coordination of loaner trays and implants. Collaborate with SPD to assess new equipment and instrumentation requested by surgeons/providers. Address and resolve any equipment issues promptly to mitigate disruptions to surgery schedules and case loads.
  • Preadmission Testing (PATS): Oversee the collection and review of preadmission testing in collaboration with nursing staff to ensure thorough anesthesia assessments. Identify potential concerns and ensure timely follow-up on missing documents or tests to avoid disruption to the surgical schedule.
  • Employee Health Management: Maintain employee health records to ensure compliance with onboarding, annual flu vaccinations, and TB screenings.
  • Annual Education: Lead the coordination of annual education and training programs for all clinical staff and providers, ensuring alignment with regulatory standards and best practices.
  • Policy Development & Review: Create, review, and update policies as needed to align with current practices and regulatory requirements, ensuring staff compliance and safety.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to all local, state, and federal regulations, including Joint Commission and CMS certification requirements. Maintain a deep understanding of ASC regulations and operational best practices.
  • Risk Management: Serve as the primary point of contact for addressing patient or family concerns, ensuring that conflicts are resolved quickly and professionally. Promote a patient-centered, compassionate environment, enhancing satisfaction and trust with patients and their families.
  • Pharmaceutical Compliance: Oversee medication handling, storage, and administration, ensuring full compliance with state and federal regulations. Manage pharmaceutical inventory, monitor controlled substance documentation, and work with vendors to maintain necessary stock levels.
  • Infection Prevention Compliance: Develop and implement infection control policies and collaborate with an Infection Prevention (IP) consultant to create an annual IP plan. Conduct daily hand hygiene audits, infection surveillance rounds, and provide ongoing staff education to ensure compliance with Joint Commission and CMS standards.
  • Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI): Lead at least two studies annually to assess compliance with regulations and promote continuous improvement. Present findings and recommendations to the Administrator and/or Board of Directors to enhance quality and operational effectiveness.
  • Budget & Resource Management: Oversee nursing department budgets, manage supply costs, and ensure resource allocation is efficient and cost-effective while maintaining high standards of care.
  • Patient & Family Communication: Foster a patient-centered culture by ensuring clear and compassionate communication with patients and families throughout their care journey.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Develop and implement protocols for emergency response situations, ensuring readiness for any crisis that may arise.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Licensure & Certification: Active RN license in New Jersey; BLS and ACLS certification required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience required, with at least 2 years in a leadership role within an ambulatory surgical center (ASC) or a similar setting preferred.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of ASC regulations, infection control, and pain management protocols. Must demonstrate initiative to actively seek out and utilize resources to expand knowledge and overcome challenges.
  • Skills: Exceptional leadership, critical thinking, and communication skills. Must be a self-starter with strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to work independently in a fast-paced environment. Ability to thrive under pressure and proactively address operational challenges.
