Position Summary
The Field Technician position will primarily involve the installation and maintenance of the company’s physical communications network as it relates to providing services to residential and small business end users. Field Technicians perform most of their work at customer locations, or in the field outdoors.
Essential Job Functions
· Perform an assortment of tasks required to make cross connects on distribution frames and assist others with testing of plant cable facilities.
· Fusion splice loose tube fiber in underground and aerial plant, install and seal enclosures, NIDs, etc.
· Perform minor tasks related to maintenance of the switching and broadband network, including: data switches and routers, ONU, OLT, Fiber Frames, Cat 5e/6 terminations.
· Install and replace short sections of buried and/or aerial cable and drops to eliminate faults or extend existing cables. Install pedestals, install terminals, test cable, locate underground cables, and repair faults in cables.
· Install structured cabling including fiber optic cable and Cat 5e/6, and coax. Perform Cat 5e/6 terminations on patch panels and jacks. Fusion and mechanical splice fiber optic cables. Install fiber housings and splice enclosures in both aerial and underground environments.
· Install/Rack and stack data equipment, as well as stage phones, computers, and cameras.
· Perform minor preventative maintenance on vehicles assigned to the employee. These tasks include checking and adding oil in the engine, antifreeze/coolant in the engine, water in the battery, windshield wash liquid, and air in the tires. Also refuel vehicle when Warehouse Attendant is not readily available.
· Perform record keeping tasks associated with daily activities. Completing service order estimate forms, material usage forms and other plant maintenance specific forms will be required.
· Install and maintain video surveillance systems.
· Install Security Systems
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Skilled in basic electricity and electronics.
· Skilled in Fusion splicing loose tube cable
· Skilled in basic knowledge of computer electronics.
· Skilled in basic telephony.
· Skilled in basic safety principals.
· Skilled in problem solving.
· Ability to follow Company Standards.
· Ability to communicate effectively with employees with employees across departments in a courteous and professional manner.
· Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical people.
· Ability to pay close attention to detail.
· Ability to effectively prioritize multiple projects.
· Core Qualifications/Certifications/Training/Education/Requirements
· Vocational Training and/or two-year technical college or equivalent, or equivalent experience.
· Basic networking training
· Basic fiber overview training.
· Cable locating.
· Structured cabling installation
· Clean driving record
Physical Requirements
Be able to lift and carry object up to 75 pounds. Be able to drive for up to 2 hours at a time. Be able to climb ladders or use bucket trucks up to 45ft in air. Be able to sit for long period during splicing operations. Steady hands with good hand eye coordination.
