Job Overview

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a motivated, ambitious individual to join our well-integrated team. The post holder will provide a diagnostic neurophysiology service and will be able to develop a special interest in their chosen field.

While hosted within the directorate of neurosciences, this post incorporates three dedicated PAs for contribution to the Highly Specialised Services for Rare Neuromuscular Diseases. We strongly encourage informal contact from interested clinicians.

Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this post is to provide expert opinion on patients with neurological disorders, specifically patients with neuromuscular disorders. The appointee will be expected to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to them at the regional neurosciences centre. The post holder will be responsible for performing peripheral neurophysiological investigations including nerve conduction studies, electromyographic (EMG) examinations, specialised quantitative EMG studies and also for interpreting routine and more complex specialised electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings, including neonatal EEG, sleep-deprived EEG, short and long-term video-EEG telemetry, home video-EEG telemetry, MSLT, MWT, PSG and ambulatory EEG recordings and muscle ultrasound.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

As a clinical neurophysiology department hosting Specialist Trainees (STs), both academic and non-academic, and healthcare scientists enrolled on the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) the provision of supervision, teaching and hands-on training to STs and Scientists will be a core component of the role of consultant in the department.

The post holder will be expected to attend the weekly neuroscience educational / audit meetings and will be able to participate in the Neurology Grand Round for the purposes of internal CPD. The post-holder will be expected to take part in the weekly diagnostic and advisory MDT as part of the HSS and contribute to the diagnostic pathway of complex neuromuscular patients. The successful candidate will also participate in an annual appraisal. The post holder will be expected to meet the requirements of continuing professional development in accordance with the Royal College of Physicians.

Education, Qualifications And Specialist Skills

Essential criteria

  • Primary Medical Qualification.
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC).
  • MRCP or equivalent.

Desirable criteria

  • Higher Degree.
  • Special skills training in the specialty.
  • MD or PhD or equivalent.

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria

  • At least 4 years’ training in clinical neurophysiology and achieving independent practice.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in neurophysiology.
  • The ability to perform and report on neurophysiological examinations, both adult and paediatric.
  • Knowledge and experience in quantitative EMG.
  • Knowledge and experience in neonatal and paediatric EEG.
  • Knowledge and experience in Video-EEG Telemetry.
  • Knowledge and experience of diagnosis of rare neuromuscular patients and of the necessary specialist electrodiagnostic techniques

Desirable criteria

  • Enthusiasm to develop new services
  • Knowledge and experience in specialised NCS/ EMG is desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience in Paediatric NCS / EMG.
  • Experience in neuromuscular ultrasound.

Management and Administration Experience

Essential criteria

  • Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty.
  • Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines.
  • An understanding of Clinical Governance.

Desirable criteria

  • Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals.
  • Evidence of leadership / project management.
  • Evidence of having implemented change.
  • Experience in developing and implementing new technologies.

Teaching

Essential criteria

  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
  • Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills.

Desirable criteria

  • Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills.
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education.

Research

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings.
  • Research/critical review of literature.
  • Publications in the last five years.

Desirable criteria

  • Higher degree.
  • Evidence of success in attracting and managing research grants

Audit

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of participation in audit.

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit.
  • Evidence of having revisited the audit to assess improvement.
