PARA-EDUCATOR - LIBRARY COORDINATOR
Monday - Friday, 7.5 hours/day, 186 days
SUMMARY: A para educator instructs students in an individual or group setting. He/She helps with assigned learning activities, and provides assistance to students under the direction of the teacher and/or building principal.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide leadership and manage our district libraries to maintain a cohesive environment between schools.
2. Purchase the newest reading materials and formats necessary to maintain the high standards set for our libraries.
3. Provide training and supervision for library paras, substitutes and student teacher assistants. Responsible for library para schedule.
4. Have basic library knowledge such as the Dewey Decimal System, book classification and shelving procedures.
5. Plan and execute one to two book fairs per year to supplement district library budget, including recruiting and supervising student workers for book fairs.
6. Plan and carry outs HS and MS level book clubs each month.
7. Provide a summer reading program to maintain student skills and promote lifelong readers.
8. Provide instruction in computer and library research skills.
9. Organizes books, videos, tapes, records, compact disks and other material and equipment.
10. Knowledge of processing and mending library materials.
11. Monitor and maintain budgets for elementary and high school library materials, supplies and technology.
12. Suggests appropriate books to students for classroom assignments and personal reading.
13. Handles procedures for check-out, fines and return of library materials.
14. Supervises students in library. Maintains effective discipline.
15. Assist students and staff to use effective research methods.
16. Work with teachers to enhance student’s information literacy skills.
17. Plans, prepares, and develops various teaching aids such as bibliographies, charts, and graphs.
18. Computer skills including general knowledge of computer usage, ability to use database software and Follett Destiny.
19. Present subject matter to groups of students, utilizing variety of methods and techniques such as lecture, discussion, and supervised role playing. Is able to motivate, encourage and keep students on task.
20. Is organized, reliable and able to work independently.
21. Provide instructional support to students in accordance with teacher directions.
22. Record data on individual student progress in the curriculum and behavior program.
23. Develop a rapport with all students and be a positive team player.
24. Physically capable of lifting a student (must be able to lift 50 pounds). Heavier lifting will utilize a two person lift or assistive devices. Willing and physically capable of kneeling, bending and working or sitting on the floor with students, based on student needs.
25. Ability to attend to personal care of students, such as; toileting, lifting, transferring, changing, feeding and providing other services, depending on the needs of the student(s), if necessary.
26. Ability to perform varied tasks in a busy atmosphere.
27. Playground and lunchroom supervision, if necessary.
28. Perform other tasks as reasonably requested by the teacher or administrators.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Has necessary computer skills and library filing skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Two years of college credits required (48 semester or 72 quarter credits) or completion of Praxis Exam with a passing score.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret appropriate curriculum materials.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
