Job Summary
Collects venous and capillary blood specimens from newborns, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients for diagnostic testing. Assists with clerical functions and data entry. Plates cultures and collects urine drug screens. Provides phlebotomy training and competency assessments for CMA students, LPNs, and RNs as needed.
Job Responsibilities
Other duties may be assigned.
Greets patients and answers phone calls in a timely manner; demonstrates excellent communication skills.
Batches PAPs for Reference Lab; unpacks and receives specimens from Messenger routes; Bills for Blood collection.
Performs order entry and clerical functions as requested and assists at reception desk as necessary.
Collects venous and capillary blood specimens in compliance with established protocols; (inpatient and outpatient) for newborn, pediatrics, adult, and geriatric patients.
Collects urine drug screens according to established protocols for chain of custody.
Accurately identifies patients and patient specimens; promotes patient safety.
Provides patient education and instruction.
Maintains confidentiality concerning patients/clients.
Plates cultures and performs miscellaneous support functions.
Maintains an organized and safe work environment; cleans and stocks blood draw stations.
Organizes and prioritizes work (ER, stat.) to meet patient expectations.
Promotes customer relations and quality operations.
Provides phlebotomy training and competency assessments for CMA students, LPNs, RNs, etc. as needed.
Displays competency for the Phlebotomist role as evidenced in the annual performance appraisal following the FHN PRIDE Standards.
Qualifications
Requirements
Education: High School Diploma or general education degree (GED). Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
Required Experience: One to two years’ experience. Computer skills.
Licensure/Certification/Registration: CPR is required.
