  • Ability to identify, assess and interpret the student's health needs
  • Knowledge of current medical practices and legal implications
  • Knowledge of resources available to strengthen the child's school experiences
  • Ability to counsel with child, parent, teacher and medical professionals
  • Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with students, parents, co-workers, and community representatives with whom he / she makes contact
  • Ability to adapt her professional knowledge and skills within school district policies to the educational setting in a responsible manner
  • Possess the courage and initiative to develop and strengthen positive health attitudes, physically, mentally and emotionally

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : The essential functions of each employee's position includes (1) regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job; (2) the ability to perform the identified tasks and to possess and utilize the identified knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the identified work activities; and (3) the ability to perform the physical requirements on their specific job description.

    Basic :

  • To directly strengthen the educational process through constructively developing, maintaining and improving the well-being of the total child, physically, mentally and emotionally
  • Frequent :

  • Assess and evaluate health and developmental status of pupil in order to make a nursing diagnosis and to establish priority for action to attain the highest degree of positive health possible
  • Interpret results of medical findings concerning the student for parents, school personnel and the pupil
  • Counsel student, parents and school personnel and plan action for eliminating, minimizing or accepting health problems that interfere with effective learning
  • Serve as resource consultant to the classroom teacher
  • Assist in formulation of policies, standards and objectives for the school health program within policies of the school system
  • Arrange for and execute physical assessment of vision, hearing, dental, height, weight, nutritional status and general health in accordance with state law
  • Maintain up-to-date individual health records for each student in line with professional ethics and legal limitations
  • Notify parents in writing, of problems or potential problems observed in their child and encourage them to seek help
  • Follow-up on treatment of a student's health deviations that need further care, offering resources in the community when needed
  • Make home visitations to establish and exchange information as a means of understanding the child's background, family needs and health problems
  • Utilize health services as a means of direct and indirect teaching
  • Be constantly watchful for the detection of disease and minimize the spread of communicable disease
  • Assist in providing special facilities for the child with special needs and such modifications as may be needed
  • Alert school administrators to health trends and problems
  • Maintain a current and accurate knowledge of the total school program in order to work effectively with other school personnel
  • Be alert for deviations of normal appearance or behavior utilizing the expertise of the classroom teacher whose close daily observation is an invaluable tool
  • Strive to attain compliance with state immunization laws
  • Motivate maintenance of high immunity levels to disease through the use of a booster shot program on an individual basis
  • Implement exclusion and readmission policies established for the control of disease with the school system
  • Be alert for possible safety hazards in the school environment and channel information to the proper school personnel for alleviation of hazards
  • Give immediate temporary care in cases of sudden illness or injury
  • Notify parent or guardian as promptly as feasible of sudden illness or injury
  • Arrange for appropriate and safe transportation of an ill or injured pupil while that pupil is under the jurisdiction of the school
  • Complete and file accident report in cases of injury to a pupil or school personnel within the jurisdiction of the school system
  • Assist in or complete necessary insurance forms as designated by administration
  • Obtain medical diagnosis and recommendations with parental permission where relevant to the school situation
  • Serve on staffing conference committees in the Special Education area
  • Cooperate with speech and reading clinicians in matters relating to the student's progress
  • Give support to staff members in developing positive mental attitudes and act as a resource in counseling in regard to personal and family health problems
  • Supervise administration of such necessary prescription medications as may be needed during the school day in accordance with accepted medical practice and in compliance with school regulations
  • Participate in inservice activities, promote dental health week, personal hygiene presentations, Kindergarten Round-up, speak to community groups on request, open houses, American Education Week, and attend such ongoing educational courses benefiting the school nurse field as are available
  • Prepare and submit reports as needed to administration and the State Department of Health
  • Coordinate purchase and distribution of such medical supplies as needed
  • Promote appropriate conduct of students in the school setting
