Summary
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide tutoring and guidance to individual and small groups of students in a classroom, laboratory or other assigned learning environment; tutor students in assigned subject areas; perform clerical duties in support of classroom activities. Understands and works effectively with people of differing cultures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements.
- Assist teachers in the presentation of learning materials; tutor individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the classroom teacher.
- Assist with lessons as directed by the teacher; explain words and meanings; rephrase materials and explain instruction to assist students in the educational process.
- Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating computers and educational software packages and applications, and distribution and collecting materials and supplies.
- Under the direction of the classroom teacher, may grade and / or record homework and other assignments.
- Serves as a liaison between the student and teachers. Keeps teachers appraised of student progress. Confer as needed with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
- Direct group activities of students as assigned; monitor tests and study periods; accompany students on field trips as assigned.
- Tutors individual students and small groups of peer-level students in a laboratory or classroom-type setting to develop and increase academic skills.
- Reinforces and reintroduces information and materials presented in class and introduces alternative or expanded information not presented in class to enhance student understanding.
- Under the direction of the classroom teacher, supports students in laboratory procedures and in the purpose and use of laboratory materials, including programmed instruction, reading machines, calculators, and laboratory libraries.
- Guides students in the use of computers, including computer basics and access of educational software packages / applications.
- Reviews tests with students, determines which concepts were misunderstood, and assigns additional work to help enhance understanding of course content under the guidance of the classroom teacher. May advise students on techniques for alleviating test anxiety. May proctor tests.
- Tutors students in test-taking strategies (e.g., flash cards, study guides, test-taking techniques, coping with stress, and otherwise alleviating test anxiety).
- Monitors and oversees behavior of students according to approved procedures; reports progress regarding student performance and behavior. Accompanies students going from one location to another.
- Assists students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance.
- Assures the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations. May assist with loading and unloading of students onto buses.
- Participates in meeting and in-service training programs as assigned.
- Performs regular and recurring clerical functions. Organizes for easy access and use, and may rewrite learning materials. Maintains files of answer keys, answer sheets, laboratory instructions, modules, charts, and signs. Prepares instructional and classroom materials; score tests; records and averages grades; maintains student records and files.
- Reads and maintains up-to-date familiarity with materials used in multiple subjects.
- Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
