Job Summary
The Patent Agent will be involved in supporting the U.S. Intellectual Property (IP) team and working closely with legal, scientific, regulatory, and business team members in the process. The candidate will be involved with new product development, patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate (FTO) assessments, and monitoring and evaluating of competitor patent portfolios in the pharmaceutical, nutrition, and intravenous (IV) therapy fields.*This position requires working onsite 3 days per week at our Lake Zurich, IL site.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate technological issues, perform patentability analyses, draft patent applications, assist outside counsel in prosecuting patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and maintain all related documentation.
- Collaborate with foreign IP colleagues regarding global patenting and FTO strategies.
- Monitor and analyze competitor patent portfolios and assist to develop non-infringement strategies, invalidity positions, and/or opportunities to file patent applications.
- Assist with IP due diligence analyses for in-licensing and joint venture opportunities.
- Support complex patent opinion and patent litigation activities.
- Work closely with portfolio development, business development, regulatory, project management, marketing, and legal to support launch of new pharmaceutical, nutrition, and IV therapy products in the US.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, or a related science; Graduate degree preferred.
- Registration to practice before the USPTO.
- 3 or more years’ experience working as a patent agent/technical advisor in a law firm or corporate law environment.
- Familiarity with handling complex IP matters in diverse technical fields, including pharmaceutical formulations, analytical methods, product packaging, and/or medical devices.
- Knowledge of procedures for evaluating U.S. and foreign IP matters.
