GENERAL PURPOSE
This position is responsible for providing a visible and positive presence to Zoo guests to promote safety, adherence to zoo rules, and a fun, engaging experience.
Full-Time employees receive our comprehensive compensation package which includes 100% employer paid Medical/Dental/Vision, Employee Assistance Program, 401k, 10 Paid Holidays, Paid Sick and Paid Vacation time on an accrued basis. The pay range for this position is $17.52 - $23.00 per hour. Offers will be based on the successful candidate's experience.
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Walks throughout the assigned area(s) to maintain a visible presence in the Zoo for guests. Greets guests in a friendly, professional manner and demonstrates an approachable, service-focused demeanor.
- Engages proactively with guests to provide directions, resolve concerns, offer assistance, and ensure a positive and safe experience regarding other aspects of Zoo operations.
- Monitors guest activity and addresses violations of Zoo rules to the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) management in a professional manner.
- Provide emergency medical assistance to guests and staff with First Aid supplies, including CPR, AED, and O2 support, until advance medical personnel arrive.
- Alert EHS management of incidents requiring additional attention or treatment.
- Assists in reuniting lost and found children with parents or guardians.
- Serves as a primary point of contact in emergency scenarios (Incident Commander), assisting with coordination and communication with first responders and Zoo leadership.
- Provides crowd control as needed during peak attendance periods and special events.
- Opens secures and activates all building alarms in accordance with Zoo procedures.
- Provides escorts and equipment for animal transport, and some zoo deliveries.
- Maintains a high level of situational awareness while walking or standing for extended periods throughout the zoo, including during inclement weather.
- Ability to safely operate a vehicle for business purposes including but not limited to going to and from the zoo’s facilities and offsite.
- Participates in emergency drills and debriefs and may be designated to be the primary responder during certain scenarios, under the direction of the EHS leadership team.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND JOB QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalent GED- Minimum one-year related experience in security, emergency response, or customer service environment.
- Strong verbal English communications skills required both oral and written. Bilingual (Spanish or Hmong) communication skills a plus.
- Ability to deal calmly and authoritatively with the public and to work under considerable pressure in crowds and with difficult members of the public.
- Basic Life Support, AED, CPR, First Aid, O2 every 2 years.
- A valid California driver's license, valid vehicle insurance, enrolled in the CA Employer Pull Notice program and successful completion of the FCZ Drivers Training Program required.
- Must be able to register as a proprietary private security officer with the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. (BSIS)
- Proficient computer skills required in Microsoft Office.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to walk and/or stand for prolonged periods, including during high temperatures or special events.- The employee must be able to lift or carry up to 25 pounds.
- Must be able to respond to emergency scenes, potentially requiring running, lifting, or assisting guests in distress.
- Visual acuity to read printed instructions and safety information, and to assess animal and guest activity at close range and at a distance.
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication (in person and via telephone), at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
- Having moderate mechanical dexterity abilities to allow the candidate to manipulate objects and respond to related environments (locks, gates, doors, alarm systems) as needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Primarily functions outdoors, with exposure to heat, cold, insects, poor air quality, and inclement weather.
- Works in close proximity to Zoo animals.
- Occasional local travel may be required.
- Must be available to work evenings, overnight, weekends, and holidays.
