Summary/Objective
The Machine Operator prepares wood surfaces to become a part of finished goods by utilizing appropriate equipment – including computer-controlled machinery. In addition to operating computer-controlled machines, the operator must measure the dimensions of finished pieces and comply with quality, production, and safety standards of work. The machine operator will be working out of our Virginia branch based in Suffolk.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate computer-controlled machines to perform one or more machine functions on wood surfaces
- Lift workpieces to machines manually and or assisted with Lift tables
- Monitor machine operation and control panel displays
- Stop machines to remove finished workpieces or to change tooling, setup, or workpiece placement, according to required machining sequences
- Measure dimensions of finished workpieces to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments, templates, and fixtures
- Listen to machines during operation to detect sounds such as those made by dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and adjust machines to compensate for problems
- Confer with supervisors or programmers to resolve machine malfunctions or production errors or to obtain approval to continue production
- Regularly performs basic routine maintenance on the machine, such as cleaning, lubrication, and inspection

- Stack or load finished items or place items on conveyor systems
- Maintain work area by following good housekeeping rules

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to hazards associated with manufacturing. The employee will need to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). The employee will work with and around machinery and be exposed to vibration.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must be able to lift and/or move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position and days of work are Monday through Friday. Mandatory overtime, including extended shifts and weekend work, is sometimes required.
Travel
There is no regular travel required for this position. However, infrequent specialized off-site training may be provided requiring travel.
Required Education and Experience
- Basic proficiency in math and reading comprehension
- 1 years of machine operator experience
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred
