Friends Center is an early childhood education center providing year-round, full-time care for children ages 3 months to 5 years. We offer a child-centered, hands-on learning experience in a safe and nurturing environment. At the Center, children learn through creative play and a wide range of developmentally-appropriate activities. Classification: PT/FT Non-Exempt
Hours: Part-time 20 hrs (some evenings and occasional weekend hours)
Salary Range: Dependent on qualifications,$17-$20 an hour

Position Summary: The Paid Intern is responsible for supporting the Head Teacher and Assistant Teachers with the general supervision and management of the children and all curricula as related to the center. The Paid Intern will support the implementation of the mission of FCfC by providing best practices childcare while using a cooperative model and the Quaker principles of simplicity, peaceful resolutions of conflicts, integrity, community, equality and stewardship. The Paid Intern will be assigned to classrooms and age groups based on program needs throughout the year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching:
- In coordination with the entire teaching staff; the paid intern helps with the supervision and implementation of our FCfC curriculum
- Interacts with the children in a loving and constructive way, speaking to them positively and kindly, modeling gentle touch and clam body movement
- Helps children with dressing, toileting and diaper changing, showing respect for their bodies and encouraging their initiative and desire for independence
- Meets physical, social-emotional and cognitive needs of all children in the center
- Holds care and supervision of children as first priority. Positions self so that children are always within sight and sound, and moves around the room or playground with the children as needed to maintain appropriate adult/child ratios
- Assists in keeping the classrooms organized, clean and appealing including changing, as directed by the Head Teacher, the materials on the center walls and/or bulletin boards on a monthly basis based on developmental needs and interests
Modeling:
- Maintains a positive emotional attitude with Executive Director, School Director, families and other teachers
- Models teacher guidelines for volunteers and parents
Physical Space:
- Maintains center facilities with appropriate care so that materials are sanitized each day
- With direction from the Head Teacher prepares materials and activities for children, snacks and lunch, and tidies and cleans the classroom as needed
Communication:
- Communicates with Head Teacher and other teachers daily
- Shares conversations and interactions with families with the Head Teacher and other teachers in a confidential and sensitive manner
- Seeks guidance and refers families to the Executive Director and Site Director as appropriate
Professional Development:
- Attends all staff meetings
- Makes an effort to know current theory and best practices
- Participates in all required early childhood meetings, conferences and/or events
- Includes all continuing education certificates in personnel file
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and must possess the following minimum qualifications:
- High school diploma
- CPR (child-specific) and First Aid Certification - current or willing to obtain training immediately upon hire
- Adequate oral and written skills
- Bilingual in Spanish or other languages is a plus
Physical Requirements:
- Vision and hearing within normal range so as to be able to provide sight and sound supervision
- Ability to lift and carry 40 lbs.
- Ability to bend, sit on the floor for prolonged periods, and get up and down with ease

Hourly range: $17-$20 dependent on qualifications

FCfC offers free weekly food from Trader Joe’s through Haven Harvest' Food Rescue program. Once per week food is delivered to the Center giving families, staff and educators an opportunity to take home various food items.
Emergency Financial Hardship Loan/Grant: Up to $1,000
FCfC has a Financial Hardship Program. Any teacher who endures financial hardship has the opportunity to ask for financial support in the form of a loan or a grant.
Professional Development: free professional development opportunities
FCfC offers free professional development opportunities for all staff members. All Staff create a professional growth plan with a team member. Professional development opportunities are paid for by Friends Center for Children.
Emotional Hardship Program: Free Emotional Well-Being Support
FCfC offers free emotional well-being meetings with any teacher that endure an emotional hardship. All FCfC teachers have the opportunity to ask for emotional support to find external resources for further support and guidance.
