Summary
The work involves training and daily management of Animal Care Specialist staff to ensure the implementation and observance of procedures, rules, and regulations of standard of care and behavior treatment of shelter animals. The Manager of Animal Care monitors the efficient and required completion of assignments of the animal care teams from feeding to cleaning.The work also involves ensuring appropriate enrichment is given for animals under our care, and ensuring dogs are exercised through playgroups, DDOs, walks, or other daily activities while performing other related shelter duties. The Manager of Animal Care carries out daily assignments, follows up on matters, and uses independent judgment and training to take appropriate actions to deal with standard recurring situations with the guidance of the Director of Operations.
Essential Job Functions
- · Train ACS staff on Standard Operating Procedures.
- · Train and mentor ACS staff on proper behavior, treatment and animal handling techniques as well as General Safety Protocols found in the Employee Guidelines.
- · Assists and supports in ongoing behavior assessments for each dog and is responsible for reporting findings and recommendations to the Director of Operations and the President and CEO.
- · Records behavior assessments and observations in each animal’s file via the animal management platform.
- · Develop, implement, and maintain animal care staff schedules.
- · Works closely with the Intake and Medical Departments to coordinate care of animals.
- · Involved in decision-making regarding the outcomes of animals.
- · Cleans cages, feeds animals, and performs related housekeeping duties in assigned areas.
- · Assists in keeping proper inventory levels of cleaning and enrichment items, food, and training treats.
- · Works closely with the Foster and Volunteer departments to place animals that would benefit from foster, sleepovers, or Doggie Day Out.
- · Collaborates with the Adoption department on the best candidates for outreach, pet stores, and other events.
- · Report any issues (concerns, complaints, misconduct, occurrences) with shelter animals, staff, volunteers, or the public to management, to the Director of Operations and/or CEO.
- · Trains, mentors, and communicates with volunteers on training and handling techniques as well as enrichment for animals.
- · Follows all FAMD policies and protocols.
- · Performs additional tasks as required

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
- Advanced knowledge of animal care and behavior.
- · Possesses skills needed to train and supervise animal care staff.
- · Skilled in performing and correctly recording behavior assessments.
- · Handles animals safely and effectively.
- · Ability to build and expand on programs.
- · Possess customer service skills
- · Follow proper cleaning procedures.
- · Knowledge and ability to make humane decisions for the animals.
- · Must be Fear Free certified or become certified during the probationary period.
- · Strong communication skills are required to effectively and efficiently communicate the needs of animals and staff promptly.
- · Strong leadership skills to ensure staff remain on task while championing and motivating them to grow and expand their knowledge.
Training and Education
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a supervisory role.
- Minimum of 2 years in the animal husbandry field.
- Experience managing larger staff.
- Education could be considered for experience.
Licenses/Certificates
Fear Free certification.
Special Requirements
Certification in CPDT is preferred but not required
Physical Demands
The work is performed in the office and shelter surroundings. Typical positions require workers to walk or stand for long periods; lift and carry up to 50 pounds; climb stairs, bend, reach, hold, grasp and turn objects; and use fingers to operate computer keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak normally and to use normal or aided vision and hearing.
