The Environmental Services Technician is an integral part of the Facilities department. Under the general supervision of the Environmental Services Manager, the Environmental Services Technician will work with a diverse team of Horticulturalists, Maintenance Technicians, and High Line administrators to achieve the highest standards of cleanliness and organization throughout the park and our HQ facility. In this role, you will be exposed to maintenance and repairs of all kinds, in which we will foster a learning environment for those interested.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness throughout the High Line, both topside and at street level, including but not limited to HQ facility, office space, public gathering areas, bathrooms, access points, elevators, elevator shaft glass, below ground vaults, stairs, mechanical rooms, and drinking fountains.
  • Work hand in hand with the Maintenance team to perform various tasks
  • Comply with additional cleanliness requirements as dictated by the coronavirus, COVID-19
  • Remove trash from the Park and bring to the proper disposal area
  • Use specialized cleaning products and cleaning techniques required to maintain the High Line’s many unique features, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Report and remove graffiti.
  • Participate in snow and ice removal by means of shoveling, snow throwers, bobcat.
  • Maintain and report on the inventory of custodial supplies.
  • Quickly respond to spills, clogs, bathroom malfunctions, potential hazards, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with all team members to accomplish daily assignments and tasks in a timely manner.
  • Work collaboratively with programming and events staff to prepare the Line for visitor use.
  • Operate pressure washers and other equipment.
  • Collaborate with contracted specialists to perform seasonal or specialty tasks such as interior elevator shaft glass cleaning.
  • Act as an ambassador for Friends of the High Line, answering questions for park visitors about horticulture, High Line history and design, and general park information.

Desired experience of a successful candidate may include the following, but candidates will not be screened exclusively based on meeting these qualifications:

  • Must be extremely dependable, punctual, detail-oriented, and a good communicator with staff and the public alike.
  • 2-3 years experience, preferably in public space or outdoor space maintenance. Building Porter's experience is also acceptable.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to use or willing to learn scissor lifts, bobcat, and other machinery
  • Experience with facility cleaning procedures
  • Experience using hand tools and power tools, willingness to learn to use other tools
  • Demonstrate good judgment and a professional demeanor.

Abilities

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, travel 10 or more miles by foot or self-powered vehicle over the course of the day and remain in a fixed post for several hours at a time for five days a week
  • Ability to bend, twist, grasp, crouch, crawl, and/or lift up to 30 lbs at a time
  • Ability to work holidays, weekends, early mornings, and/or evenings as part of a regular schedule

This is a Seasonal, Full-Time, non-exempt position.

The hourly rate for this position is $25/hour.

The location for the role remains onsite.
