Do you have a passion for history and sharing it with others? Looking for an interesting summer job and occasional weekend work in the history and tourism field? The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania (FRM) seeks a skilled, energetic person to provide front-line customer service, ticket sales, historical interpretation, guided tours, and light security and housekeeping at a world-class railroad museum. The main focus of employment for this position is over the Museum’s busy summer season (June through August), but opportunities for additional weekend hours during the other months of the year are available.
About the Employer:
The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania (FRM) was formed in 1983 and is chartered and licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as an associate nonprofit organization which assists the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in fulfilling its mission to document, preserve and interpret the rich and diverse heritage of railroading. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania hosts about 80,000-100,000 visitors annually, and FRM staff and volunteers play a key role in the daily operations of the Museum in visitor services, education, restoration, library and archives, administration, advancement and the museum store. Presently, the nearly 1,500 memberships with the FRM include guests from many US states and several foreign countries.

Schedule:
This is a seasonal position (or a maximum of 800 hours annually):
· Peak Season - June through August: 55-60 hours bi-weekly
· Off-Season - January through May and September through December: 15-30 hours bi-weekly
Scheduling is flexible and will be coordinated with the Custodial Guide Supervisor. The museum is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 4 PM, and Sunday, 12 PM to 4 PM. The typical work day is 8:30 AM until 5:00 PM (Wednesday through Saturday), and 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM (Sunday). The length of the lunch period is one hour.
Compensation: Starts at $16 per hour.
Minimum Requirements:
· Willingness to work full-time over the summer months, with the option to work weekends or special events during the shoulder seasons – not to exceed 800 hours annually.
· At least six months’ experience in customer-service work or work in a related area, such as tour guide or historical interpretation, security, retail, customer service, and/or custodial work.
· Such training as may have been gained from a standard high school; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
· Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.
· Must obtain Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check; Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance; and an FBI Criminal History Clearance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Conducts tours of the Museum, interprets historic locomotives and rolling stock, and assists with group tours.
· Works the admissions desk, including the point-of-sale system, selling tickets, and answering visitor questions.
· Provides frontline customer service to our patrons, including answering visitor questions and explaining the admissions and tour options to visitors in a clear and concise manner.
· Answers phone calls, taking messages and redirecting calls as needed.
· Performs basic housekeeping tasks (such as vacuuming, the cleaning of restrooms, sweeping and mopping of floors, and the cleaning of windows and surfaces).
· Assists with opening and closing procedures for the Museum.
· Assists full-time staff in protecting the buildings, grounds, and exhibits from damage and theft.
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
