About FOTR:
Friends of the Rainforest is a U.S.-based non-profit organization that works with children and adults to provide education and awareness, centered around biodiversity and ecology and raise funds to support the Children’s Eternal Rainforest in Costa Rica. We do this through educational programming locally, nationally, and internationally, granting funds to organizations devoted to conservation efforts, and arranging ecotours for private and school groups.
Overall Position Description:
Working under the Program Director, the Environmental Educator will work to further the mission of Friends of the Rainforest by facilitating lessons and workshops utilizing FOTR curriculum and adapting it for use in classrooms, camps, and other forms of educational or enrichment programs. This position will work closely with the Program Director to continue developing current lessons while also adding new curriculum and educational offerings while maintaining and seeking out new relationships with local and national schools, teachers, educational groups.
This position is seasonal, starting in March 2025 and concluding in August 2025 [exact dates TBD], and is part-time at 10-15 hours per week at $18.00 hourly.
Responsibilities:
- Develop a positive rapport and continuous communication with local agencies, schools, and teachers spanning throughout St. Louis County and the Metro-East region
- Plan and execute speaking engagements, lessons, and workshops with all levels of students on a variety of ecology topics
- Assist the Program Director in preparing quarterly reports for the Board of Directors
- Seek appropriate community partners and represent Friends of the Rainforest
- Assist with orientation and training education volunteers
- Other duties as assigned by the Program Director
Qualifications
- Minimum requirement of a bachelor’s degree (or currently working towards) in STEM Education, Environmental Education, Ecology, Biology, or a related field
- Experience planning and executing speaking engagements
- Familiarity with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and STEM programming
- Excellent writing, researching, and editing skills with a high attention to detail
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, WordPress, and PowerPoint
- Ability to supervise and train development staff/volunteers effectively
- Exhibit strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
- Self-motivated and ability to work independently
- Must be able to lift 20 pounds
- Must pass fingerprint background check
- Driver’s license required
- Candidates must be located in St. Louis area
