Purpose of the Position
To plan and provide a varied and resident centered programming that meets a variety of interests and individual needs as well as adapting the social, environmental and personal care for full and purposeful life in the resident’s home. The Activity staff is responsible for working with the neighborhood team to complete the daily neighborhood routine. This position will be cross trained to other positions in the Gardens and River Ridge Neighborhoods.
Essential Functions
- The Activity staff specialize in coordinating with residents and employees to carry out the activity programming for the neighborhood. The Activity staff will also seek to teach others how to engage residents in spontaneous activity so the neighborhood is full of life.
- May provide personal care assistance including grooming and other assistance, as needed. Knows the content and follows each resident’s service plan.
- Develops effective relationships with residents and learns resident preferences and individualizes services for each resident.
- Communicates and electronically documents activity program participation in an effective and timely manner. Passes information on to co-workers to provide continuity of services. Collaborates with other staff to insure that activities are provided at various times.
- Prepares for meal service, serves food/coffee, and acts as a host or hostess to provide the warmth of family with the service of a nice restaurant. Joins residents living in the Gardens during dining to encourage socialization and to develop relationships.
- Ensure the cleanliness and attractive appearance of the neighborhood working in conjunction with the household staff.
- Assists Caregivers with resident cares and rounds, as needed.
- Works effectively as part of the neighborhood team accepting responsibility of work related tasks, sharing the work load with other team members.
- Effectively communicates with supervisor and other departments.
- Accommodates residents’ needs through responding appropriately to residents’ verbal/nonverbal expressions of needs.
- Develops plans and identifies resident and neighborhoods interests for planned programming that meets residents’ needs and adapts approach to meet residents’ behavioral needs using dementia specific education and training.
- Coordinates and/or completes resident biographies/history and updates as indicated.
- Coordinates and/or completes resident activity assessments no less than annually.
- Assures community involvement in facility and works with volunteers.
- Assures resident’s spiritual needs are met by willing employees (self or others).
- Safeguard resident property.
- Provides residents with opportunities for independence and choice consistent with their Service Plan, involve residents in self-care activities. Promotes independence and wellness.
- Responds appropriately and timely to resident requests for help and maintains positive relationships with resident’s friends and family members. Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth and personal interest, as well as a calm environment.
- Treats residents with unconditional positive regard; focuses on resident’s strengths; attempts to support or minimize weaknesses; looks at underlying causes of behavior.
- Follows general safety, first aid, emergency response and infection control procedures.
- Meets requirements for in service training and meeting attendance per campus policy and state and federal requirements. This includes maintaining required licenses and/or certifications.
