What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Training Director position at Frost Valley YMCA?
The Seasonal Training Director is a dynamic position with variety day to day. The Director must be flexible and willing to work long hours each day. This position supports all of our Overnight Camp Programs, working with and across several camp teams. The Training Director will be responsible for the development and facilitation of staff training workshops, the implementation of training schedules and systems, and coordination of initiatives to support staff and in-Training participants. This staff member also acts as a member of our seasonal camp director team and will support the logistics of running camp at large and help to solve challenges and issues that arise. This position assists in supervision of all staff and ensures that each camper is cared for in a manner appropriate to a campers’ wellbeing. Facilitating staff experiences to be positive and insightful as well, is crucial to this position. The successful candidate is detail oriented, able to create and manage systems, able to supervise and coach others effectively, and able to take initiative independently.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist Frost Valley YMCA Camp Directors with all day-to-day responsibilities and logistics, including, but not limited to: pre-season staff training facilitation, mid-season staff training facilitation, program observation, and training curriculum development ensuring the safety of all staff and participants.
- Collaborate with year round camp directors to oversee and implement all seasonal staff training efforts.
- Work with camp leadership to evaluate and assess staff development and skill needs; lead training sessions to support staff development and preparedness through the summer.
- Review existing training curriculum and develop a new hire training program.
- Develop and facilitate small group check-ins with Jr. Counselors, in-Training participants and first time staff.
- Maintain a friendly, cooperative, and professional relationship with all staff and year-round support departments.
- Create a safe and fun environment for staff growth and development.
- Assist in management, training, and supervision of all Overnight Camp staff.
- Be an active member of a team, including, but not limited to, giving your opinion in an appropriate manner, taking on delegated responsibilities and helping to maintain the physical, emotional and mental health of each team member.
- Be a positive role model for fellow staff and campers at all times. This includes modeling acceptable behavior, language, Frost Valley’s core values and outdoor standards.
- Ensure that Frost Valley Resident Camp achieves the highest standard and meets the mission and goals of both the Summer Camp Department and Frost Valley YMCA, as well as expectations of customers.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Offer help and assist with any other duties as assigned for the success of Frost Valley.

- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Experience working with campers ages 7-16 in an outdoor setting
- Able to develop and facilitate staff training sessions.
- Able to coach and communicate in a positive way to summer camp middle management, counselors as well as full time support staff and their respective department heads.
- Ability to be flexible to sudden changes in schedule, staff and campers.
- Be a strong, positive role model for campers and fellow staff members
- Prior experience with logistical planning.
- Possess strong camping industry knowledge.
- Be very detail oriented and safety conscious.
- Excellent management, customer service, communication, group facilitation, organizational, and supervisory experience required.
- Ability to work very long hours under high stress is a must.
- Possess excellent communication and organizational skills
- Be a strong leader and work well with a team of others
- Be able to multi-task and handle pressure well

- The employee frequently is required to walk throughout camp, sit and reach.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
