What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Day Camp Junior Counselor position at Frost Valley YMCA?
The Junior Day Camp Counselor is responsible for the planning, implementation, and facilitation of Neversink Parks and Rec Summer Day Camp for campers aged 4-12 at the Grahamsville Fairground. This position focuses on camper safety, activity planning, and ensuring a positive camp experience. Junior Counselors are responsible for maintaining camper records, managing behavior, and communicating with parents as needed.
Requirements:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Camper Supervision and Safety:
- Supervise a designated group of campers daily, ensuring their safety, well-being, and engagement in camp activities.
- Program Planning and Preparation: Plan, prepare, and lead engaging weekly activities tailored to the interests and developmental levels of your camper group.
- Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate attendance, behavior, and daily paperwork for your assigned camper group.
- Role Modeling:
- Serve as a positive role model for campers, demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and a commitment to camp values.
- Parent Communication: Assist with basic communication with families, providing friendly and informative updates as needed.
- Safety Standards and Compliance:
- Support safety protocols and help maintain compliance with American Camp Association and Ulster County Board of Health standards for a day camp serving over 160 campers per session.
- Collaboration:
- Coordinate with multiple departments to uphold the standards and reputation of Neversink Parks and Recreation and Frost Valley YMCA.
- Additional Duties:
- Perform other tasks as assigned to support the camp’s mission and daily operations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Prior experience working with children aged 4-14 or a strong interest in doing so.
- Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team, multitask, and handle high-energy environments.
- Enthusiasm for working with children, teens, families, and camp staff
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

- The employee may be required to stand on their feet for long periods of time.

PAY RATES: $16 an hour Monday through Friday 8:00am-4 pm with a 30 minute lunch and two 15 minute breaks
Dates: June 30th - August 22nd, 2025 (there is the option to take the week of August 11th off)
