What are the responsibilities and job description for the Supervisor, Forestry position at Fruit Growers Supply?
Responsible for the overall management of the reforestation activities for the timberlands and will be responsible for assisting the Forest Manager in the preparation and implementation of forest management activities. Primary duties include managing and negotiating contracts, evaluating reforestation projects for survival success and cost effectiveness, and maintaining a successful reforestation program focusing on quality control and continual improvement. Additional duties include timber sale layout, harvest supervision, long-range planning, and budgeting. Reports to and works closely with the Forest Manager in coordinating reforestation and forest management activities.
Essential Job functions/ Duties:
- Oversees and manages the reforestation program for the Company. Performs reforestation specific duties and projects including watercourse protection zone flagging, site administration. Resource protection of timberlands.
- Oversees Plantation Administration including nursery coordination, seed banks and seed inventory monitoring, and seedling storage. Oversees plantation maintenance including thinning, pruning, pest control.
- Supervises the planting and inspection of trees, including stocking surveys and reports. Assists in harvest planning and timber sales preparation. Prepares Sites – slashing, piling, burning, pesticide application
- Works in the field with timber, marks unit boundary flagging, timber cruising, field mapping, resource monitoring.
- Assists Forest Manager in developing the annual budget. Assists in the development and implementation of long-range planning
- Contract development, supervision, administration, and negotiation.
- Supervises the logging and road building activities. May supervise the work of 3rd party subcontractors and field crews. Oversees inventory fieldwork. Represents FGS in professional and industrial associations as well as community groups. Support and participate in SFI program compliance and public outreach.
- Works closely with and assists the GIS/ Inventory Supervisor to ensure plantations are accurately represented.
- Completes and submits government forms related to permits for all operations. Ensures regulatory compliance and modify permits as needed. Interacts as a point person with government agencies related to timber harvest permits.
- Functions as the Logging Administrator for specific duties, ensure log quality as specified in sales contracts, ensures regulatory compliance and modify permits as needed, completes and submits government forms related to timber operations.
- Safety - Adheres to all company safety standards. Participates in regular safety meetings.
- Overnight travel is occasionally required and often requires driving over 300 miles per day.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Education, Certifications/Licenses, and Experience:
- 5- 10 years Licensed or has experience/expertise in a forestry related field. Familiarity with U.S. west coast tree species, mensuration, and/or silviculture. Experience with maps, compass, GPS, and GIS is desirable.
- 4 Year BS degree in Forestry or other Natural Resources degree OR 5 years performing forestry duties.
- Required valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Possesses expertise in timber sale preparation, including silviculture, resource protection, mensuration, scaling practices, logging systems, wildlife biology, or GIS analysis.
- Possesses experience with maps, compasses, GPS, and GIS is desirable
- Ability to be physically able to perform fieldwork.
- Ability to work with co-workers and management personnel in a professional manner.
- Ability to drive 4-wheel drive vehicles in a variety of conditions including city, rural, and off-road and frequently driving 300 miles in a day.
- Ability to observe the environment and exercise situational awareness to ensure personal'personnel safety from potential dangers such as hazard trees, animals, and'or illegal activities.
