Emergency Department Technician
Full-Time Benefit Eligible
Schedule: 7:00am-7:30pm, 36 hours/week; every third weekend & holiday rotation

GENERAL SUMMARY:
- Prepare patient for physical examination by RN and physician.
- Take and record vital signs in the EMR every 2 hours or more frequently, as directed by RN.
- Observe and report patient's condition to RN.
- Round on all patients in designated area every 30 minutes or more frequently, as designated by RN.
- Perform patient care duties as prescribed by a physician and as delegated by a Registered Nurse including the following:
- a. Routine throat cultures
- b. Application of oxygen per mask or nasal cannula
- c. Administration of enemas
- d. Surgical skin preparation
- e. Insertion and discontinuation of urethral catheters
- f. Initiation and discontinuation of IV therapy under direction of Registered Nurse
- g. Application of cardiac monitor
- h. Application of simple orthopedic splints and supports
- i. Application of sterile dressings
- j. Application of antibiotic ointment (except to eyes)
- k. Eye irrigations
- l. Cleansing and preparation of wounds
- m. Oral suctioning
- n. EKG
- o. Pulse oximeter
- p. Obtain laboratory specimens, including blood draw
- q. Obtain blood cultures
- r. One Touch Blood Glucose Screening.
- Record in FirstNet and the patients EMR specimen collection, procedures, testing, VS and interventions performed.
- Maintain awareness of emotional needs of patient and family.
- Perform a variety of technical functions including the following:
- a. Ordering and stocking of supplies
- b. Monitoring the expiration dates on sterile supplies
- c. Preparation of sterile fields and trays
- d. Listing and securing of patient valuables
- e. Routine cleaning assignments
- f. Assisting the physician during surgical procedures
- g. Completion of requests for diagnostic tests
- h. Listing of supplies for charging purposes
- i. Transportation of patients
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Basic reading, writing and mathematical skills normally acquired through the completion of a high school education or GED program.
- Competence acquired through one of the following is required:
- Emergency Medical Technician certification.
- Completion of (2) clinical semesters in a school of nursing program.
- Six (6) months of previous experience in an emergency department in a position that required skills in venipuncture, EKGs, urinary catheterization, knowledge of sterile technique, and splint application in the last two (2) years. - CNA with 1-2 years of experience.
