Position Overview:
An independent, college-preparatory institution in Charlotte, NC, seeks a dynamic, enthusiastic, and experienced French or Spanish teacher to join its World Languages faculty. This position primarily involves teaching middle school students, along with some courses at the upper school level. Additionally, the teacher will align instruction and assessment with the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and cultivate students’ language development through authentic, real-world contexts. Key Responsibilities:
Instruction & Curriculum:
Design and implement engaging lessons that promote listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiency in accordance with ACTFL standards.
Develop curriculum materials that integrate culture, literature, current events, and thematic units to enhance students’ linguistic competence and intercultural awareness.
Employ a variety of instructional strategies, including task-based learning, project-based activities, and technology integration to meet diverse learning styles and needs.
Assessment & Feedback:
Utilize formative and summative assessments to measure student progress in line with ACTFL proficiency targets.
Provide timely, constructive feedback to students, guiding them toward improved communication skills and cultural understanding.
Classroom Environment & Student Engagement:
Foster a respectful, inclusive classroom climate where students feel comfortable taking risks in their language production.
Encourage active participation, critical thinking, and collaboration through interactive dialogues, role-plays, debates, and multimedia resources.
Professional Collaboration & Growth:
Work closely with World Languages department colleagues to ensure curriculum continuity and vertical alignment across grade levels.
Participate in department meetings, professional development workshops, and ongoing language pedagogy training.
Qualifications & Preferences:
Bachelor’s degree in French, Spanish, Education, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.
Fluency or near-native proficiency in French or Spanish. Native speakers or candidates who have successfully completed an OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) assessment are strongly preferred.
Demonstrated experience teaching at the middle school level is essential; experience with upper school students a plus.
Familiarity with ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and commitment to teaching for communicative competence.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
