Position Summary:
The Director of Finance is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all financial operations, including budgeting, financial planning, accounting, compliance, and reporting. This position ensures the financial health of the organization while supporting strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate will be a mission-driven financial leader with experience in nonprofit financial management, preferably in an education-focused setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and oversee the organization’s annual budget, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
- Manage financial reporting, forecasting, and cash flow analysis to provide data-driven insights for leadership.
- Oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and reconciliations, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Prepare and present financial statements, grant reports, and board reports.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations, including nonprofit tax filings (IRS Form 990) and audits.
- Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets.
- Lead and mentor the finance team, ensuring efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
- Collaborate with development and program teams to support grant applications, reporting, and restricted fund management.
- Support financial aspects of fundraising initiatives, including donor stewardship and capital campaigns.
- Work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to provide financial insights and strategic guidance.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (Master’s degree or CPA preferred).
- Experience in Financial management, with at least 3 years in a nonprofit setting.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, including fund accounting and grant compliance.
- Experience with financial management software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct) and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent leadership, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to diverse stakeholders.
- Experience working with a Board of Directors and external auditors.
