Role and Responsibilities
Functional Nutritionist plays a vital role in guiding patients toward improved health through evidence-based nutrition strategies that align with functional medicine principles. This role works collaboratively with providers and the broader clinical team to deliver patient-centered care.
- Review medical history, lifestyle factors, and lab results to assess nutritional needs and identify imbalances or deficiencies.
- Provide nutrition education and explain the connection between dietary choices, chronic conditions, and overall wellness.
- Develop tailored dietary protocols that address patient needs and complement their overall treatment plan.
- Offer evidence-based supplement guidance aligned with functional medicine and patient goals.
- Conduct follow-ups to evaluate outcomes, make plan adjustments, and support behavior change and accountability.
- Keep current on the latest nutrition and functional medicine research to apply best practices in clinical recommendations.
- Work closely with providers, health coaches, and wellness assistants to ensure an integrated patient experience.
Qualifications and/or Work Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or a related field
- Certification or licensure as a Nutritionist, Dietitian, or equivalent (e.g., CNS, RD, or FMCA certification preferred)
- 1–3 years of clinical experience, preferably in a functional or integrative medicine setting
- Knowledge of supplements and functional nutrition therapies
Preferred Skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong organizational and documentation abilities
- Familiarity with EMR systems and scheduling platforms
- Ability to translate clinical findings into patient-friendly recommendations
- Passion for holistic health and patient empowerment
