What are the responsibilities and job description for the Robotics Engineer position at Futura Energy Group?
Robotics / Electro-Mechanical Engineer:
We’re partnered with a clean-tech startup developing autonomous energy systems that convert air, water, and sunlight into synthetic natural gas — affordably and on-site. By combining CO₂ capture, solar-powered electrolysis, and precision control systems, they’re reinventing how fuel is produced and distributed.
Their mission is to decarbonize natural gas production using scalable, self-contained units that operate in the field with minimal human oversight. You’ll be helping build and automate the electro-mechanical heart of that system — one line of control code at a time.
This is not an 'office job' — it’s a hands-on, first-principles engineering role for someone who’s built electromechanical systems from the ground up, thrives in a low-ego, high-ownership environment, and enjoys pushing hardware to its limits.
What You’ll Do:
- Design and implement minimalist, robust state control systems on COTS hardware (e.g. Arduino, Raspberry Pi)
- Interface with existing mechanical/electrical designs to eliminate manual pain points through automation
- Architect, write, and debug bare-metal control code for distributed subsystems
- Implement algorithms like PID or Kalman filters to maintain reliable system states
- Curate common data streams for logging, archiving, and future optimization
- Champion a safe-by-default, high-reliability mindset in all automation decisions
What We’re Looking For (not all required):
- You’ve built non-trivial electromechanical systems.
- Strong skills in low-voltage and medium-voltage systems
- Comfortable working with unconventional hardware and outside of traditional PLC environments
- Solid grasp of bare-metal programming, control theory, and low-cost embedded design
- Bonus if you have familiarity with NFPA 70, 70E, 79, or UL508A
- Bonus if you have experience/knowledge of solar cells, electrolytic cells, renewable natural gas and/or battery storage systems
Location - Burbank, CA
Benefits - Competitive benefits package including equity, performance-related bonuses, 401k, health, dental, and vision insurance, and a flexible leave policy.
Pay range $120,000.00 - $180,000.00 per year, to be determined on a case-by-case basis.
Travel - Some travel (5-10%) may be required to oversee installation off-site.
