Job Description Senior Product Development Engineer (Contract) - HIGH likelihood this will be extended into a full time position
1.0 General:
The Senior Product Development Engineer (Sr. PDE) will be responsible for driving the technical execution of toy and game concepts, from design to production, ensuring performance, cost, quality, and schedule adherence across multiple brands. This is a 1-year contract role focused on lower complexity toy products designed and developed by the Asia design and engineering teams. The Sr. PDE will act as a key liaison, facilitating seamless collaboration between the North American (NA) and Asia development cross-functional groups. They will leverage their expertise to bridge communication and ensure successful project execution.
Location: Culver City, CA with hybrid office schedule
Reporting: This position will report to the Product Development Manager within the Asia development engineering team (based in Hong Kong).
2.0 Specific Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Global Brand Team (Design and Marketing teams) on generating new toy concepts, and provide technical and cost assessment.
- Serve as a central point of contact between the NA and Asia development engineering teams, ensuring clear communication and project alignment.
- Lead product review meetings and create action plans for technical deliverables, fostering collaboration between NA and Asia.
- Anticipate, analyze, resolve, and escalate project issues, working effectively across teams to find solutions.
- Drive productivity by implementing design for manufacturing/assembly up front, considering manufacturing capabilities.
- Facilitate knowledge transfer by documenting processes and best practices for both teams to continuously improve the full turnkey process.
- Partner with responsible departments within Asia to ensure all project milestones are delivered on-cost, on-spec, on-time.
- Provide mechanical, material, and engineering expertise throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Prepare documentation for product stage gate approval process meetings and present on behalf of the Asia team.
- Define product design details for manufacturing, optimizing DMF/A, while considering input from both NA and Asia teams.
- Create product and performance specifications, incorporating the needs of both NA and Asia.
- Improve efficiency in the engineering process through continuous improvement, with a focus on optimizing collaboration between NA and Asia.
3.0 Required Skill Set:
- Ability to provide strong leadership and foster collaboration across geographically dispersed teams.
- Experience working with creative professionals (designers and engineers) in both North America and Asia.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, with fluency in Cantonese.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrates a "hands-on" team approach to problem-solving, considering input from both NA and Asia.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to employ critical thinking and problem-solving techniques to approach any/all issues. If unable to resolve certain issues, can demonstrate a willingness to actively engage other support teams within Asia and North America to drive towards resolution.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Proactive and enthusiastic in approaching challenges, with a solution-oriented mindset and uses mature discretion in approaching situations.
- Ability to travel to Asia (as required).
- Ability to mentor junior engineers, develop talent, and model professionalism within the Asia development engineering team.
- Operate with minimal supervision in technical and organizational capacities.
- Ability to take direction and flex execution style based on feedback from teams.
4.0 Required Qualifications & Experience:
- 5-8 years Product Engineering service/experience.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field preferred.
- Toy or CPG experience an asset.
- Experience with plastics, materials, manufacturing, and/or engineering costs for durable goods.
- Fluent in Cantonese.
