Summary

Performs routine inspection related tasks under close supervision. Routine tasks include assisting more experienced inspectors in the preparation phase of inspections; reviewing prior inspection reports, reviewing wastewater discharge permit applications, reviewing plans and blueprints, data entry, preparing written correspondence, researching regulatory citations, and other related duties as directed by G&G management or the client. The majority of the entry or training level activities are performed in a training type environment which are performed primarily in the field. The Environmental Compliance Inspector Trainee is the entry level position in the Environmental Compliance Inspector job class family. The work experience gained in this position combined with required certification training will prepare the incumbent for the next level in this professional certification class.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Perform inspection duties with respect to:

· Grease interceptors

· Storm water inspections

· Hazardous materials/ Hazardous waste inspections

· Plan check inspections

· Wastewater sampling

· Other field work deemed relevant by G&G management and/or the client.

2. Write clear, concise, timely, and accurate inspection reports.

3. Obtain the CWEA Environmental Compliance Inspector Grade I certification within 12 months of hire.

4. Maintain existing compliance databases and ensure accuracy of input and associated reports.

5. Follow directions and the chain-of-command.

6. Perform routine inspections under close supervision.

7. Attend meetings as directed.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

The ideal candidate has a 4-year degree from a fully accredited college or university in Environmental Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, or a similar field. A combination of education and experience can be used to satisfy the minimum requirements as long as they adequately prepare the incumbent to successfully complete the training and pass the CWEA certification examination for the Grade I Environmental Compliance Inspector series. Ability to manage spreadsheets (MS Excel) and prepare documents (MS Word); work under close supervision; work effectively with client and corporate management; resolve routine day to day problems; and achieve goals and objectives set forth by management.

Language Skills

The ability to write reports and business correspondence; the ability to comprehend standard operating procedures; the ability to interpret sophisticated material in scientific journals, lab analysis data, materials safety data sheets, and legal documents; and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, co-workers, and the public. Polished interpersonal communication skills are desirable traits for inspectors.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals). Ability to compute rates, ratios, averages, and percentages and to interpret graphs. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as calculating area, volumes, acreage, mass loading, conversion from metric to standard measurements, and similar mathematical operations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic formats and deal with abstract and concrete variables. The incumbent must be a self-starter capable of grasping procedures and issues; have exceptional organizational and time management skills; process and maintain confidential material; and demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Computer

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Project Management software; spreadsheet and word processing software. An individual should have knowledge on using the internet to research relevant topics and source valid information to be provided on reports.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee may be required to walk long distances with heavy wastewater sampling equipment. The employee will be expected to use tools to safety and effectively lift sewer manhole covers. The employee will be required to drive for long distances and durations to meet the client’s needs. Employee must have the ability to sit for long periods of time. Inspection reporting requires fine motor actions of hands; wrists and fingers are required along with the ability to withstand repetitive hand, wrist and finger movement. The ability to use hands to manipulate finger, handle or feel is required. The employee must be able to reach with hands and arms; and to talk, see and hear. The employee may be required to stoop or crouch. The employee must be able lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a variety of industrial and commercial facility environments while conducting inspections. These environments require strict adherence to safety rules and wearing of personal protective equipment (including safety glasses, hard hat, hearing protection, and steel-toed shoes). The job requires driving to and from inspections in a multitude of cities surrounding Riverside, CA. Approximately 25% of the activities are in an office environment. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. Travel to and from designated project sites throughout the County and other local Southern California regions may be required. A valid California driver's license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced at time of hire.

Pay: $43,638.40 - $56,825.60 per year
