Associate Designer, Sweaters - DKNY
Success Profile: The Associate Designer, Sweaters for DKNY will create and design a competitive fashion apparel product line that strikes a balance between relevant commercial product and brand right emotional fashion, that will collectively grow the business according to the brand’s strategic and financial objectives for the customer.
Reporting to: Director of Design
Brand/Product Focus: DKNY Sportswear/Sweaters
Location (On-Site): New York City, Midtown Manhattan – Fashion District
Key Responsibilities
Design and Development:
- Creates sketches for development, by both hand and Illustrator.
- Completes all aspects of design packages - sketching, tech packs, creating and maintaining line sheets.
- Researches and develops innovative trims each season.
- Researches and sources new yarns.
- Prepares and maintains tech packs from initial development through bulk.
- Organizes and maintains design development including artwork, trims, fabric worksheets, initial development, finalized tech pack, line list, etc.
- Attends garment fittings and assists technical designers.
- Revises and updates information in tech packs and communicates changes/updates to factories.
- Submits and approves artwork/strike-offs, lab dips, etc.
- Displays proficiency in both Illustrator flat sketches and hand sketches on a figure.
- Creates CAD presentations for internal and external use with speed and accuracy.
Production and Overseas Communications:
- Creates and maintains charts for overseas sample requests.
- Communicates daily with factories for ongoing Product Development.
- Sample Prep for meetings and/or market.
- PLM data entry to create BOM’s for production.
- Coordinates all domestic and overseas development.
Professional Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience
- 3 – 5 years of experience in sweater apparel design, required
- Expert technical skill proficiency using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, required
- Demonstrated ability to sketch technical drawings, with strong hand sketch and competent computer design skills
- Must be able to competently correct protos, working alongside technician, identifying and resolving issues
- Demonstrated capability and knowledge of varied constructions spanning ALL categories
- Familiarity with the yarn/sweater development process and working with overseas factories and vendors
- Fashion savvy with the critical ability to identify and interpret commercially viable trends
- Accurate attention to detail, strong organizational skills and ability to take independent action to follow through on open items and issue resolution to completion
- Confident, capable, highly effective cross-functional written/verbal communication, teaming and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to cultivate design talent – training, development, performance management – direct reports and contract resources
Educational Background
• Bachelor’s or technical degree in Fashion Design or equivalent work experience

The pay range for this position is: $65,000-$75,000 per year.
