Position Overview: The Controller is the owner of the accounting operations of the company, including preparing periodic financial statements following GAAP, maintaining accuracy and completeness among the accounting and adjacent systems, and developing, improving, and adhering to controls to mitigate risk. This person can excel in a fast-paced, small company environment where the Controller is involved in more than just the accounting function. They have great follow-up and follow-through on projects and commitments and are comfortable communicating with company leadership and managing upward and downward. This position requires significant cross-functional interaction, a deep understanding of all aspects of the company's business operations, and the curiosity and drive to seek continuous improvement in reporting accuracy and timeliness, development of the accounting team, and company performance. This individual must be able to identify and resolve issues, manage the day-to-day accounting, treasury, and risk management functions, work independently, develop, manage and lead a team, have the utmost integrity and honesty, and work with purpose and a sense of urgency.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for all aspects of accounting and ensuring accuracy, adherence to deadlines, and compliance with proper accounting rules and regulations.
- Manages and develops the accounting team: Senior Accountant, Accounts Payable Specialists, Accounts receivable specialists, and fixed asset accountants
- Responsible for accurate and complete monthly Wienerschnitzel, Hamburger Stand, Tasty Freez, and corporate consolidated financial statements.
- Reviews and approves journal entries.
- Assist the team with general ledger account reconciliations.
- Prepares monthly financial presentations for the Board of Directors.
- Reviews monthly rent and open payments and tracks percentage rent liabilities/payments.
- Manages the payroll function to ensure employees are paid timely and accurately and comply with all labor laws.
- Reviews employee vacation and sick accruals to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Ensures appropriate payroll records and reports are maintained for financial reporting and payroll/insurance audits.
- Oversees and is responsible for the annual year-end audit and tax work and manages the audit and tax service provider relationships.
- Is responsible for ensuring compliance in all areas of tax (income, sales/use, property, real estate, etc.) and proper storage of records.
- Develops, improves, and is responsible for maintaining internal controls and proper control and process documentation.
- Drives continuous improvement in accounting processes and systems to identify and realize areas of automation and efficiency.
- Using accounting data provides insights, increases accuracy, and recommends performance improvements in franchisees' financial results.
- Assists in financial forecasting and reconciliation of actual to forecasted results.
- Lead the annual budgeting process
- Oversees risk management, including managing the business insurance renewal process and business insurance-related claims.
- Is responsible for the day-to-day management of the treasury function, including maintaining a 13-week cash forecast and managing the weekly check-run process and all ACH payments.
- Assist with 401(k) plan administration and compliance.
- Performs other duties and ad hoc analysis, as requested by the CFO, and serves as a strategic partner to the CFO.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting/Finance
- CPA license
- 5 years experience in a Controller position within a restaurant company
- Experience managing, leading, and developing an accounting team
- Professional knowledge of GAAP
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Detail-oriented with a high level of attention to financial accuracy
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely
- Ability to exercise professional judgment
- Demonstrated proficiency in various PC applications, including Microsoft Office
Work Environment & Qualifications:
- Normal office environment. When warranted, may be required to work beyond normal working hours at the office or at home to meet deadlines.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks.
- Handling and being exposed to sensitive and/or confidential material.
- Maintain composure under conditions of urgency and/or pressure situations
