About the Role

Are you an experienced accounting professional looking for an opportunity to make an impact in a dynamic and growing company? We are a rapidly expanding organization with veterinary operations in both the U.S. and Canada, seeking an experienced Controller to lead our financial operations. This role will play a critical part in shaping financial strategy, ensuring compliance, optimizing processes, and providing leadership to the finance team. Reporting to the VP of Finance, this is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and enjoys driving financial efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

o Financial Oversight & Reporting

  • Lead and manage the month-end and year-end close process, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Oversee general ledger reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.

Prepare and present accurate and timely financial reports (monthly, quarterly, and annual).

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP (U.S.) and Canadian accounting standards, including GST/HST requirements.
  • Oversee tax compliance, including sales and use tax, GST/HST, as well as property tax, franchise tax, and associated filings.
  • Work with external auditors and tax advisors to support compliance and reporting needs.

o Accounts Payable, Receivable & Vendor Management

  • Manage and maintain vendor relationships, ensuring timely and accurate payments.
  • Oversee corporate credit card expenses and employee expense reimbursement program.
  • Manage and support accounting staff including functions such as accounts payable and general accounting.
  • Work closely with operational teams to offer financial guidance on cost control and efficiency improvements.

o Cash Flow & Expense Management

  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting, collaborating with operational teams to assess financial efficacy.
  • Maintain standard costs for distributed and manufactured products, analyzing key labor, material, and overhead variances.

o Team Leadership & Process Optimization

  • Maintain and improve strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Evaluate, create and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and systems to optimize financial efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the VP of Finance on financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to align financial goals with business strategy.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in accounting or finance required.
  • 5 to 10 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a multi-entity or service-based business.
  • Experience in the veterinary industry is a plus but not required.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Canadian accounting experience, including GST/HST, is a plus.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems and accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar).
  • Strong proficiency in financial reporting and general ledger management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment while managing multiple priorities.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with financial modeling.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working independently in a remote environment.
