What are the responsibilities and job description for the Detention Center Corrections Nurse- RN position at Gallatin County, MT?
POSITION OVERVIEW
This position is located in the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office Detention Division and is responsible, with the medical provider, for ensuring the delivery of health care in a timely and clinically appropriate manner to inmates and or staff. Ensures those served receive consistent and appropriate care in accordance with established local, federal and state policies, procedures, regulations and guidelines. Provides professional medical care to inmates based on their specific needs. This position is supervised by the Detention Center Clinic Director.
GENERAL DUTIES
- Communicates in a professional manner with inmate’s family/friends, attorneys or guardians regarding medical care and concerns following all HIPAA guidelines.
- Attend and participates in committees as required.
- Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with staff. Establishes and maintain effective work relationships with inmates, staff and the public.
- Covers nursing absences or vacancies when required.
- Evaluates incoming inmates for fitness for incarceration.
NURSING DUTIES
- Responsible for answering inmate medical kites and determining if the presenting problem will be triaged in the clinic.
- Performs nursing assessments and evaluations, follow-up consultation and health education without undue delay.
- Coordinates appropriate lab and diagnostic procedures as ordered by the medical provider. Schedules any outside physician appointments and coordinates transports with security staff.
- Completes appropriate paperwork.
- Refers outside physician orders to Medical Provider.
- Works closely with mental health providers to provide appropriate medical services.
- Respond to medical emergencies.
- Obtains patient histories and develops patient care treatment plans.
- Administers medication passes. Instructs inmate regarding medication use and treatment of illness.
- Interview and advises inmates and staff regarding health and illness prevention. Utilize community resources to teach, provide follow up care as appropriate, and provide other support services. Provides consultation for communicable diseases.
- Administers vaccinations and immunizations to inmates and staff.
- Practices safety, environmental and/or infection control methods.
- Maintains confidentiality in regards to inmates following all HIPAA guidelines.
- Perform venipunctures and handle lab specimens.
- Set up medications for administration and ensure accuracy of medication delivered.
- Participate in ordering of medications.
- Ensure accuracy of Medication Administration Record.
- Maintain clinic and stock room clean neat and orderly.
- Order stock items when necessary and prior to depletion.
- Participate in call rotation.
- Review and act on items on the clinic schedule and assure it is accurate and up to date.
- Assess incoming inmates for fitness for incarceration when applicable during shift.
RECORDS
- Maintains and reviews inmate medical/dental records in accordance with required medical/dental guidelines.
- Stores records in a double lock system as required by HIPAA and in folders consistent with medical practice.
OPERATIONS
- Informs supervisor and or security staff of critical information that may affect safety/security or care of the facility.
- Keeps the Medical Provider and supervisor informed at all times of relevant information.
- Complies with all Gallatin County, Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center policies, procedures and rules and provides documentation as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
This work requires knowledge of the principles and practices, theories, laws and authorities of corrections nursing, professional nursing, and medicine that includes: medical terminology, diagnostic and preventative techniques; pharmacology; communicable disease follow up and interventions; immunizations; operation and maintenance of equipment used in patient care; community resources; health care records management; interpersonal relations; health education and counseling; Detention Center policy and procedures; inmate rights; common safety hazards and precautions; and the ability to apply knowledge; maintain accurate medical charts and records; handle sensitive and confidential information; communicate effectively both in writing and verbally; responds to emergency situations; and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work. This position is required to make independent determinations that could have significant ramifications and must possess excellent verbal and written skills. Position requires use of a variety of medical equipment and tools.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
The required knowledge and skills are generally acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a minimum of an Associates Degree in Nursing from an accredited School of Professional Nursing, Certification at a minimum as a RN and two (2) years of job related work experience. Requires licensure granted by Montana State Board of Nursing or equivalent.

Licenses and Certifications: Position must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the state of Montana or attain a Montana driver’s license within six months of hire and be insurable under the County’s liability policies.
