What are the responsibilities and job description for the English Teacher (MSSD) position at Gallaudet University Hearing and Speech Clinic?
POSITION: English Teacher
SCHOOL: MSSD (Model Secondary School for the Deaf)
SUMMARY:
Major responsibilities include planning, implementing and researching effective instructional practices that maximize student learning; accountable for student achievement; develops instructional plans/units in alignment with established standards; collaborates with other educators on teams/departments to provide an effective instructional program; documents and monitors student progress; communicates with families regarding student progress; maintains professional growth; accountable for student safety; engages in action research for continuous improvement of instruction.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
All MSSD Departments (and Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) Team 6-7-8
(Content areas are mainly English, Science, Mathematics and Social Studies) – requires a master’s degree in Deaf Education or the content area (if the master’s degree is in Deaf Education, the bachelor’s degree must be in the content area, or the candidate must present proof of state certification in the content area).
KDES Early Childhood Education:
Requires a Master’s degree in Deaf Education or Early Childhood Education (if the master’s degree is in Deaf Education, the bachelor’s degree must be in Early Childhood Education, or the candidate must present proof of state certification in early childhood education).
KDES Team 1-2-3 and Team 4-5
Requires a Master’s degree in Deaf Education or Elementary Education (if the master’s degree is in Deaf Education, the bachelor’s degree must be in Elementary Education, or the candidate must present proof of state certification in elementary education).
Teaching Fellow:
Requires bachelor’s degree in the content, deaf education or education, have minimal teaching experience, be enrolled or eligible to enroll in a graduate program in the content area, Deaf Education or Education at any greater Washington D.C. area university or college that is accredited.
All positions require:
Knowledge and understanding of child development and/or adolescent needs
Ability to provide/implement appropriate instructional activities for elementary and/or secondary school students
Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language required

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION:
All employees hired must undergo a background investigation if selected for the job and must be cleared before starting first day on the job. Reports from Background Check and Gallaudet Conduct & Security Office must be in a good standing.
Compensation: According to Teacher pay schedule.
All employees are expected to be fully vaccinated COVID-19 and Influenza (flu). They also will be required to submit their vaccination record prior to entering campus.

Teaching Fellow Requirements:
Be enrolled or eligible to enroll in a graduate program in the content area, Deaf Education or Education at any university or college that is accredited.
Fellows will teach in the Extended School Year (ESY) program each summer while in the Fellows Program at Clerc Center, unless enrolled in graduate coursework during this time period. Fellows will receive separate compensation for this work.
Fellows must enroll in a graduate program and complete a Master’s degree in the content area, Deaf Education or Education (or additional training in the content area if the Fellow already possesses a Master’s degree) within a four-year period.
The University reimburses eligible employees (Fellows) for each course during an academic year up to the amount of Gallaudet University’s Board-approved tuition amount.
Requirements if hired as Teaching Fellow:
Fellows agree to submit a copy of proof of application into a Master’s degree program to the Fellow’s supervisor before October 1st (after a hire date of August 16th); further, Fellows will also provide proof of acceptance into the Master’s degree program upon receipt and no later than the end of January of the first year of hire (after a hire date of August 16th).
Fellows agree to submit a plan of study (the Fellow’s Plan for Taking Courses form) to their supervisor, and Clerc Center HR Office at the beginning of each semester (no later than October 1st for first semester and no later than January 31st for 2nd semester) to ensure timely completion of the Master’s degree. Fellows will turn in a copy of their grade report each semester – no later than 10 days after grades are issued.
The Fellows appointment is contingent upon the results of two reviews each academic year (to be held no later than November 1st and February 1st) of their teaching ability and of their progress towards obtaining their Master’s degree.
