Galveston County Health District is seeking an Epidemiologist!
This position is responsible for performing investigations related to notifiable diseases/conditions, disease outbreaks and/or public health preparedness activities in Galveston County and other counties when requested by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

Required:
• Master’s degree in Public Health, Natural Sciences, or a related field
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in epidemiology tracking and investigating reportable health conditions
• Previous work experience as a public health epidemiologist in a government setting preferred
• Bilingual Spanish helpful but not required
• Must maintain 24/7 accessibility for potential emergencies unless prior arrangement made with supervisor
• Must have satisfactory DMV/MVR background check
• Ability for spur of the moment transportation without relying on organization vehicles
• Must pass criminal background check and drug/alcohol screening
• Customer Service Oriented
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent Computer Skills MS Office
• Must be willing and able to work evening and weekend hours if necessary
• Must be in compliance with GCHD Immunizations policy
• Must be in compliance with ICS training requirements

Traditional Duties:
• Investigate assigned reportable diseases/conditions, according to protocol, for analysis by the program director and
diagnosis by the Local Health Authority (LHA).
• Research information and guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Department of
State Health Services (DSHS) on disease prevention.
• Assist with public health preparedness response readiness planning.
• Assist in the development of policies and procedures that support public health preparedness and response.
• Intake and collect data, verify and establish case definition, submit early notification to the program director and LHA of findings or potential public health threats.
• Identify contacts (treated and untreated).
• Research and present state and national guidelines for disease prevention and control, brief the Epidemiology Manager and LHA on all findings.
• Obtain and implement prevention and control strategies as directed by the Epidemiology Manager and LHA
• Track and investigate elevated childhood blood levels.
• Participate as a member of the 24/7 on-call team.
• Monitor the health of Galveston County residents by active and passive surveillance of data.
• Assist the program director in collecting and analyzing data on investigative activities and findings.
• Assist in preparing monthly reports for the United Board of Health.
• Assist in preparing immunization report, outbreak tracking report and public health emergency preparedness (PHEP)
surveillance/epidemiology report for DSHS.
• Enter all completed cases into the NEDDS database and perform quality assurance reviews of data files.
• Review and abstract medical records, laboratory results, and other documents from health care providers.
• Refer reports for residents of other counties to DSHS or other local health departments.
• Manage blood lead databases, disease registry and hepatitis database.
• Inform and educate target population, local epidemiology contacts, and public health professionals via Regroup
notification system preparing memorandums and public health information for dissemination after approval.
• Attend meetings and training as assigned.
• Support and maintain Regroup database.
• Enter and update contacts in Regroup.
• Act as liaison and establish rapport with medical facilities and other stakeholders involved in disease reporting and
surveillance activities, as needed.
• Serve as backup to the Epidemiology Manager when needed.
• Coordinate elevated blood lead activities.
• May require periodic overnight travel and long hours/overtime during disease outbreaks, emergency situations or public
health disasters.
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
