Position : Substation Relay Technician
Location : All of NJ, OH and Midwest
Duration : Full-Time
Salary : DOE.
Basic Qualifications :
3 years relay testing & substation commissioning experience (15kV through to 500kV)
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without need for sponsorship.
Ability to drive and travel to client utility sites across the US, with overnight stays.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel & Word.
Job Responsibilities :
Maintain accurate and organized records, reports, and time-tracking documents.
Perform tasks such as installing, testing, maintaining, repairing, and operating circuit breakers, transformers, capacitors, regulators, batteries, relays, meters, control systems, telemetering, supervisory control systems, public address systems, and other related equipment in substations, power plants, or other electrical facilities.
Wire energized panels, operate phasing sticks, and inspect substations, including equipment, control buildings, and yards.
Monitor and record circuit and equipment loads, and prepare substation reports, including logs, operating reports, relay targets, and equipment trouble reports.
Perform routine inspections of contractor work.
Operate small bucket trucks and aerial lift equipment.
Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve electrical issues of limited complexity in circuits and equipment.
Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance using test equipment such as relay test sets, multimeters, ohmmeters, microohmmeters, circuit breaker analyzers, gas analyzers, timers, profilers, meggers, battery testers, capacitor testers, Hi-Pot testers, Ground Resistance testers, and others.
Test, calibrate, troubleshoot, and adjust various types of induction relays (e.g., differential, ground, overcurrent, under / overvoltage, transformer pressure / temperature relays) and associated auxiliary equipment on distribution circuits.
Perform calibration, functional testing, and replacement of parts on feeder voltage regulating relays and line drop compensators.
Conduct initial acceptance and calibration tests for new induction relays, including overcurrent and under / overvoltage relays.
Test, repair, and maintain substation remote alarms and equipment.
Perform switching operations and report any abnormal conditions to the Dispatcher.
Use hand and power tools to remove and replace wires, panels, doors, covers, insulation, and other components during construction, maintenance, or troubleshooting tasks.
Assist in commissioning and checking electrical equipment and new installations, tracing and identifying circuits, and adjusting protective relays and regulating equipment.
Prepare reports and record test data.
Modify wiring in AC and DC distribution and control circuits as needed.
Gain knowledge of substation circuits, equipment, operations, control systems, protective relay schemes, and testing methods.
Complete required skill demonstrations and tests to qualify for promotion to the Substation Relay Tester role.
Preferred Qualifications :
Onsite expertise in relay testing with utility companies.
Experience in system checks, wiring inspections, and functionality assessments.
Full lifecycle experience in commissioning and testing substations.
Skilled in troubleshooting and analyzing protection equipment issues.
Proficient in apparatus testing and analysis using tools like Doble protection, ProTest, AcSELerator, or Renoserv.
Experience in substation lightning strike shielding and grounding plan implementation.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to lead and conduct meetings with utility clients.
An Associates Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or a comparable combination of education and experience.
Proven electrical and mechanical aptitude with the ability to handle small, delicate, and complex equipment.
Capable of analyzing electrical control and protection problems with precision and accuracy in work.
