Job Summary:
The Elementary School Counselor supports students’ academic, social-emotional, and personal development by providing counseling services, implementing programs, and collaborating with teachers, administrators, and families. The counselor plays a key role in fostering a positive school culture and ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students.
Key Responsibilities:
Student Support & Counseling
• Provide individual and group counseling to support students’ academic, social, and emotional well-being.
• Assist students in developing coping strategies, conflict resolution skills, and positive decision-making.
• Identify students at risk and provide interventions, referrals, or additional support as needed.
Academic & Career Guidance
• Collaborate with teachers to support students’ academic progress and help address learning challenges.
• Encourage goal-setting and career awareness through age-appropriate lessons and activities.
Social-Emotional Learning & Behavior Support
• Implement and support character education, social-emotional learning (SEL), and positive behavior programs.
• Assist in behavior management strategies and interventions to promote a positive school climate.
• Support students in crisis situations and provide guidance for conflict resolution.
Collaboration & Communication
• Work closely with teachers, administrators, and parents to develop plans that support students’ success.
• Facilitate parent meetings, workshops, and resources to promote family involvement.
• Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and community resources for student support services.
Program Development & Implementation
• Develop and implement school counseling programs that align with district and state standards.
• Organize and lead activities for student well-being, including anti-bullying, drug prevention, and mental health awareness programs.
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of counseling programs and interventions.
Compliance & Documentation
• Maintain accurate records of counseling sessions, interventions, and referrals.
• Ensure compliance with confidentiality laws, school policies, and ethical standards in counseling.
• Assist with student assessments and data collection related to student behavior and achievement.
Qualifications & Requirements:
• Master’s degree in School Counseling or a related field.
• Valid Texas School Counselor certification (or eligibility to obtain certification).
• Experience working with elementary students preferred.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with staff, students, and families.
• Knowledge of social-emotional learning, behavioral interventions, and student support programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in an educational setting, preferably at the elementary level.
• Familiarity with Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI).
• Knowledge of crisis intervention strategies and mental health resources.
