Position Objective: Provide services as a Research Assistant in support of the overall functions of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Perinatology Research Branch, DIR/NICHD (PRB) has conducted translational research on the subjects of normal pregnancy, labor, and pregnancy complications. The results of this research need to be disseminated in the form of publications in biomedical journals. An individual knowledgeable with the scientific publication process in biomedical journals, submission to M-Trac for clearance by the Scientific Director of NICHD, as well as the management of the lifecycle of scientific manuscripts is sought.

Duties And Responsibilities
- Provide scientific and technical reviews, editing and writing in support of the Institute's communication efforts seeking to publicize research advances, recruit patients to clinical trials and recruit high quality staff and trainees.
- Verify study protocol information with senior authors or scientific collaborators for preparation of submission to M-Trac.
- Participate on publications team on the development and production of annual and quadrennial news publications,
- Work with staff on researching and drafting technical reports, analyzing data from the studies and publishing research findings.
- Research and edit in accordance with academic and publisher standards the following documents including, but not limited to, manuscripts for peer review by biomedical and scientific journals, book manuscripts and/or chapters, letter(s) to the Editor, or case studies.
- Perform electronic checks for plagiarism using iThenticate or similar software.
- Edit narrative text, captions, legends, and call-outs focusing on relevance, continuity, visual design, and linguistic issues per manuscript. 1
- Submit all final documents per study for consideration of peer review to a range of domestic and international journals, e.g., American Journal of Obstetrics Gynecology, Journal of Perinatal Medicine, The Journal of Maternal-Fetal Neonatal Medicine, the International Journal of Gynecology Obstetrics, Journal of Immunology, the Nature journals, the Cell Press Community, Diagnosis Therapy, and Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, among other. 2
- Above title is not applicable but this Bullet point is. Deposit all manuscript files, study protocols, and data-sharing policy into M-Trac for clearance by the Scientific Director; record the confirmation number; and capture the final authorization to store in the electronic manuscript folder. 4
- Deposit all accepted, peer-reviewed manuscript files into the NIH Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) system when the publisher does not do so, e.g., Journal of Perinatal Medicine and Ultrasound in Obstetrics Gynecology; record the NIHMS ID number. Record the PubMed ID number, the NIHMS ID number, and the PubMed Central ID number to ensure compliance with the requirements set forth by NICHD/NIH. 5
- Obtain permission licenses through the Copyright Clearance Center or through an individual journal or publishing house to use previously published materials copyrighted by others. 3
- Track the life cycle of each manuscript with the use of database software and application, e.g., Microsoft Access
- Work with staff to coordinate and develop responses to requests for information about the Institute's research activities.
- Work with staff on responding to requests for information on the Institute's clinical trial portfolio and special requests. regarding annual intramural management survey and related requests.
- Develop presentations for use by senior leadership to convey program accomplishments and key facts for use for both internal and external audiences.
- Contribute to overall communication strategy development and implementation.
- Work with staff in preparing written reports pertaining to research progress and performance, or to operational, financial or other issues.
- Assist co-authors with linguistic properties of manuscript drafts and galley proof style requirements of journals and publishing houses.
- Recommend appropriate language usage, syntax, grammar, punctuation, verb tenses, and other mechanics of good writing to research team.

- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
