Lead Pharmacy Technician

Position Objective: To provide leadership and oversight to pharmacy technician staff within the Meds by Mail (MbM) program, ensuring efficient and accurate prescription processing, adherence to VA and federal regulations, and optimal support of patient care. The Lead Pharmacy Technician will assist in training, quality control, and workflow management within the MbM and Virtual Pharmacy Service (VPS) operations.

 

 

Operational Hours: Eight (8) hour shifts between 6:30 AM - 7:30 PM Monday through Friday local time, subject to change based on workload.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of pharmacy technicians, including assigning tasks and monitoring workflow.
  • Assist in training new pharmacy technicians on MbM procedures, VA regulations, and pharmacy software systems.
  • Perform quality control checks on prescription processing to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues, escalating complex problems to the Facility Administrator or pharmacist.
  • Assist pharmacists in prescription filling, data entry, and customer service tasks as needed.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and assist with ordering and stocking medications.
  • Ensure compliance with VA, HIPAA, and security regulations related to patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and accuracy within the pharmacy operations.
  • Provide support to the Virtual Pharmacy Service (VPS) by assisting in prescription verification and other tasks as required.
  • Assist in scheduling, timecard corrections, answering questions from contract staff.
  • Maintain records on background investigations, training on contract staff, reports.
  • Responsible for day-to-day administration and coordination of contract technician staff activities with other production areas.
  • Participates with the Pharmacist Lead to perform the varied tasks involved with human resource management. Assists with training and education of personnel and ongoing evaluation of performance.
  • Initiates corrective actions necessary for any conduct violation and monitors excessive tardiness or sick leave for contract personnel.
  • Plans and publishes contract work schedules in a timely manner, ensuring adequate staffing for the accomplishment of the MbM mission and makes recommendations on allocation of resources to increase efficiency.
  • Monitors work output of contract personnel and reports any issues to MbM COR.
  • Enforces appropriate training and/or disciplinary action for contract personnel involving medication errors (quality) in a timely manner, or below average production (quantity)
  • Ensures mandatory training is completed timely by contract personnel.
  • Resolves problems and complaints of contract personnel.

 

 

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Certified by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (at the time of on- boarding or within six months); and have a minimum of six months experience in retail or hospital pharmacy setting or be a graduate of an Academic Technician Training Educational Program.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in pharmacy software systems and MS Office.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Must be located within the continental US, within 50 miles of a local VA Medical Center or VA CBOC if working virtually.

 

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Capable of obtaining VetPro certification, which is a credentialing system that is required of all VHA licensed, registered and certified health care providers.
  • Prior experience in a lead or supervisory role within a pharmacy setting.
  • Familiarity with VA pharmacy systems (e.g., CPRS, VistA).
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, and inventory management principles.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
