Role:
Garden City Community College seeks a skilled and experienced fire science professional who is passionate about helping students further their career and earn certifications in the various disciplines of the fire service industry. This is a full-time faculty position covered by the Negotiated Agreement.
Garden City Community College is a vibrant and dynamic community college located in the heart of the rural Southwest Kansas high plains region. Officially designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution, the College serves a student population which reflects the area’s rich diversity. The College serves approximately 2,000 students across multiple populations including on-campus, online, and area high schools and has a history of strong program options in both transfer and technical education. The College is located in Garden City, a community with a recent history of robust population growth. Garden City has many amenities including arts and culture, plentiful shopping, and daily jet service to Dallas.
This position is for a full-time faculty member to teach firefighter certification courses and related skills training programs including all or a portion of the following: Firefighter I and II, Hazardous Materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, Auto Extrication, Confined Space Rescue, Trench Rescue, Rope Rescue, Elevator Rescue, Structural Collapse, Fire Instructor I and II, incident management, Fire Officer I and II, Driver/Operator, and other related fire science areas. These courses/programs may be conducted at the GCCC campus or at a business location and may be held during the day, evenings, and/or weekends. All candidates interviewed will be required to provide a live teaching demonstration. Applicants skilled in a portion of the above list of content areas will be considered by the hiring committee. The college will provide support for teacher training and continued professional development.
Compensation is based on the Negotiated Agreement, where the minimum base salary and Fair Market Value adjustment for a Fire Science candidate with industry certifications is $53,025.50 for a 9-month contract. An applicant with industry certifications and 10 years of fire experience would earn approximately $56,490. Opportunities for extra pay for one-month of summer work in maintenance of the Fire Science classroom and burn tower would increase the potential earnings to approximately $62,933.48. Additional teaching experience, work experience, and opportunities for overload and summer courses may further increase earnings. These are estimates, and specific placement can be discussed with the Dean of Technical Education and Workforce Development and/or the Vice President for Instructional Services.
The college is closed for holidays throughout the academic year, including several three-day weekends, one week at Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas, and for one week during Spring Break in March.
The successful applicant will be a part of the college's Technical Education and Workforce Development team, a dedicated group of individuals working in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
Supervision is provided by a Division Chair and the Dean of Technical Education and Workforce Development.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and teach Fire Science courses and continuing education training for area agencies including online, hands-on and classroom programs related to firefighter I and II, hazardous materials awareness, hazardous materials operations, technical rescue and other related fire science areas.
- Develop, organize, and prepare training materials and curriculum.
- Assess the educational and training needs of area agencies.
- Plan and conduct live fire training evolutions for both volunteer and career fire departments.
- Contact instructors and arrange for equipment and supplies.
- Develop co-sponsoring partnerships and curriculum for courses.
- Prepare and monitor budget and progress for each course.
- Seek appropriate level of funding and/or tuition fee structures to meet GCCC budget guidelines.
- Communicate and collaborate with Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute (KFRTI) on certification programs.
- Partner with local high schools to develop dual credit opportunities.
- Evaluate courses and recommend continuation or revision.
- Use excellent communication and human relations skills.
- Use database applications to create and manage files and communicate requested information, maintaining confidentiality.
- Participate in course and curriculum design, student advisement, program review, and serve on college committees as required to maintain and improve student learning.
- Participate in staff and college meetings and contribute through appropriate committee assignment.

Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills:
Required:
- Associate’s Degree
- Industry-recognized certifications including IFSAC, PRO Board, DOD, FFI, FFII, Haz Mat Awareness, Haz Mat Ops, Haz Mat Technician, Driver/Operator, Fire Officer-I, Fire Instructor-I
- Significant and appropriate industry experience in two or more of the following areas: fire science, incident management, technical rescue, hazardous materials, confined space rescue, trench rescue, and fire officer training.
- 10 years firefighting experience
- Computer skills, including Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Fire Instructor-II
- 3 years experience teaching – preferably in higher education
- Experience as Fire Officer
- Experience with CANVAS, Blackboard or other similar learning management systems
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs.
- Valid driver's license.
