SUPERVISION:
Performs lead worker duties as assigned. Responsible for daily supervision of seasonal technicians. Responsible for assigning and reviewing daily work, assisting with problems, and identifying areas requiring additional training and support. Participates in the staff evaluation process.
GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
Coordinate and implement the Garfield County Weed Management plan, ensuring compliance with Colorado Noxious Weed Law.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Vegetation Program Administration:
- Utilizes GPS devices to locate, map and monitor noxious weed infestations for Colorado Department of Agriculture database. Utilizes GPS devices to establish and monitor biocontrol release sites.
- Designs and implements public weed education programs, including annual spring Pesticide Applicator’s Workshop, the Ag Expo, the Purge the Spurge program, and other events as necessary.
- Performs public speaking engagements to educate both public and private groups on noxious weed identification and management, cost share programs, biocontrol programs, and other relevant noxious weed-related topics.
- Assists with coordination of contracted spraying through IGA’s with the Colorado State Forest Service and other entities. Coordinates with commercial applicators to provide contracted roadside spraying on county roads.
- Compiles pesticide application data and reports and creates annual pesticide discharge report for Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
- Communicates with landowners and other local agencies regarding noxious weed issues.
- Staff liaison with Weed Advisory Board; arranges meetings and field trips, writes and compiles minutes, coordinates with guest speakers, recruits board members for BOCC consideration, and other duties as necessary.
- Seeks revenue sources for programs through grant writing, partnerships, and intergovernmental agreements.
- Manages county Tamarisk/Russian-olive program.
- Writes and coordinates press releases and public notices for upcoming programs or events, Weed Advisory Board vacancies, and relevant noxious weed issues.
Field & Site Noxious Weed Mitigation:
- Operates and maintains spray vehicles and equipment, including two spray trucks and UTV.
- Oversees revegetation projects, including seed and mulch purchasing, hand-seeding, hydroseeder loading and operation, and project monitoring. Mixes, loads, and applies herbicides daily.
- Locates, identifies and treats weed-infested areas on County rights-of-way, County-owned property, and on lands adjacent to County-owned property.
- Ensures County compliance with Colorado Noxious Weed Law.
- Supervises daily operations of the County’s Noxious Weed Program; schedules, assigns, and directs seasonal work, hires, trains and directs new employees; addresses complaints and resolves problems; ensures quality of work.
