Underground Estimator
Job Description
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
· Attend pre-bid meetings, complete jobsite visits, and keep a record of all verbal information distributed by the client during the pre-bid process.
· Complete take-offs of required materials to complete accurate pricing of wet utilities including concrete, reinforcement, and form material for structures.
· Ability to recognize change orders, clearly communicate and draft bid revisions to clients.
· Prepare project cost estimate from the client’s RFQ documents and drawings, and any other information learned during the bidding and award process.
· Know and be able to explain details behind each estimate, including the basis of the man-hours allocated for each task, personnel resources needed to execute each task, etc.
· Maintain lines of communication between company departments such as Grading and Site Concrete Divisions about costs and scheduling.
· Prepare cost estimates assuring that all necessary costs are detailed and included in the estimate, such as management services, equipment and material costs, construction costs, operating costs, and other costs associated with sewer, water, and storm drain projects for private clients as well as public entities.
· Acts as the primary point of contact with the client for project coordination and communications.
· Responsible for project material orders, POs, and submittal process. Including value engineering alternatives.
· Directs and plans project meetings, scheduling with the superintendent and provides progress updates and schedule ahead’ s for both client and internal management.
· Responsible for the coordination of project(s) schedules, budgets, Gant charts, and other project deliverables.
· Knowledgeable in wet utility materials and fittings ranging from PVC, Steel, Ductile Iron, Clay, and RCP.
· Understands open cut construction, basic shoring methods, traffic control methods and street work via job site visits.
· Ability to build positive relationships with clients, vendors, and field supervision.
· Ability to read and understand project specifications, soils reports, bid documents, special requirements (including insurance)
· Structured time management and strong follow-through skills with the ability to work on multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Full understanding of Civil Drawings, Soils Report, and Project Specifications.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office as we as estimating and accounting software such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft Projects, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Bid-To-Win (B2W), Stack Takeoff, bid mail, Smartbidnet, Building connected, Bluebeam, and Adobe.
- Ability to communicate effectively and able to provide high-level service in a fast-paced environment.
Education and Experience:
- 5 years of experience in Pipeline estimating/ project management with an emphasis in Sewer, Storm Drain, and Waterline Projects

- Excellent social/relational skills.
- Must be able to work Monday – Friday 6:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. more hours if needed to complete tasks.
- Must have a valid CA Driver’s License and good driving record.
Physical Requirements:
- Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day
Start of pay $ 115,000 - $130,000 (Depending on experience)
